2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Andre in Flight Laura Lascarso

1) The setting is particularly vivid, particularly in regards to Martin’s living space. I can picture his home perfectly, from the rainbow lantern out front to the paintings turned to face the wall despite the perfect lighting, and attention is also paid to how the house changes along with Martin and Andre’s relationship. The house is almost a character on its own, which makes the ending all the sweeter. Miami itself is equally vivid, if painted in slightly broader strokes, while other locations such as Andre’s initial apartment or Van Laar’s creepy mansion are given details that wonderfully enhance the mood of their involved scenes. While technically the paintings are more setting-accessories than a location on their own, they also bring life and character to any scene they occupy. The paintings reveal more than the characters themselves let on, like the hint of a whimsical nature in Martin’s style or the implied liminal states that Andre exists in as he finds his place in Miami. The evolution of these paintings reflect the emotional arc of the narrative, showcasing the stakes of the climax with Martin’s self-portrait.

But Andre only arrived in Miami weeks ago, after running away from small-town Alabama and his abusive father. When Martin discovers Andre trading sexual favors for a place to stay, he offers him a room in his studio apartment. As roommates only.

What starts as a playful friendship turns into something more as Andre begins posing for Martin, whose true passion is painting fantastical portraits. Martin’s obsession with Andre grows until they are sharing more than just flirtatious conversation. But when an eccentric art collector buys one of Martin’s paintings, Martin’s past jealousies resurface and threaten to destroy what he and Andre have so lovingly built.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: The Master Will Appear L.A. Witt

1) This.Was.Hot! This is the type of story I didn't want it to end. It was amazing and I really enjoyed both Misha and Ryan. It took me a bit to get to like Ryan but after a few chapters, he got into my heart. He really needed someone like Misha in his life to teach him control and respect. Wonderful read! Ms. Witt is definitely someone to look after, for her stories are all so enjoyable. Well done!

Dr. Mikhail “Misha” Budnikov takes one look at fellow fencer Ryan O’Connor and instantly knows his type. The undisciplined hothead is all ego with no finesse and even less control. In short, Misha’s pet peeves personified. To put the arrogant kid in check, Misha challenges him to a sparring match, which he predictably wins. Not so predictably, Ryan asks him to be a mentor and show him how to fence. Startled by the moment of humility, Misha agrees. What begins as fencing lessons becomes something much hotter, and before they know it, Misha is giving Ryan an entirely different kind of education. Dominance, submission, pain, pleasure—at the hands of an older, experienced man, a whole new world is opening up for Ryan. As the trust deepens and their bond strengthens, though, Ryan retreats because that sham called love left him jaded long ago. Cynical beyond his years, he’s not letting his guard down, least of all for a thrice-divorced man twice his age. Now Misha has to find a way to crack through those defenses…or accept defeat and walk away from the submissive who might just be the love of his life.

1) This is the perfect continuation of Ms. Crow's book Meridian. These two characters are very much likable. I enjoyed the drama and angst found within the pages, a story that kept me at 'the edge of my seat'. This one is definitely worth the read but first, read Meridian. You'll be glad you did.

1) I love the two main characters with all my heart. They were extremely well and sympathetically drawn, and I rooted for them the entire way through. A unique and delightful love story.
2) Really good read. I liked the pacing and how the Asperger syndrome was portrait. The writing style is really good. The story is definitely new and refreshing. The characters interesting enough and the story believable. A book that probably I will read again in the future! Well done!

Maxine Saddler has never been in love. She knows exactly what it looks like – she’s spent years studying the phenomenon in other people, but her Asperger syndrome makes it far too anxiety-provoking to attempt such a thing in her own life. Instead, she focuses exclusively on academics. She’s 23 years old, starting grad school, and perfectly content to ignore the world beyond her textbooks. That is, until she meets Ruby Satterwhite, who makes Max want to give love one more shot. Ruby is the consummate social butterfly – sorority president, extracurricular list a mile long, and stunning to boot. In short, she’s way out of Max’s league, and on top of it all, she kind of hates Max for how she blurts out whatever’s on her mind, no matter how blunt. But when they’re thrown grudgingly together for a group project in their first class, the heavens open up and the sparks begin to fly. There are only two problems – Ruby’s still pining for her perfect ex-girlfriend. It’s time to turn on the charm like never before, but can Max master the rules of love?

Chosen to bring offerings to Caliph, Kelemun captures the fascination of the young prince Praxtor who has never been denied anything his heart desires.

Ja'bar was hired to roughhouse wayward proselytes for the high priest Aknon-Horheb. In Qabbat'lee, it's good paying work for a Stripeling, a jungle savage in the eyes of the city natives, and if he's stingy and stays out of trouble, it will buy him a plot of river land.

But the splendor of Qabbat'lee is a mirage disguising a grotesquerie of corruption. When Kelemun and Ja'bar's threads of fate entwine on a night of chilling betrayal, their only hope for redemption and survival may lie in one another.

2) This story is rich, vivid, emotionally charged, and left me thinking about it long after I finished.
3) Heartfelt and never less than engaging, peopled with realistically drawn characters, this novel makes for some very satisfying reading.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Dangerous Urges Konrad Hartmann

1)Oh, my! These stories are dark, decadent, and oh-so dangerous, with wondrously damaged characters to match. They are almost too well-written for such perverse material, but I love what they add to the genre.

There are twisted alleys and dark corners in the world, the sorts of places most people never go, much less go looking for sex. But some people have urges light just can’t satisfy. From the master of horror erotica, Konrad Hartmann, comes Dangerous Urges -- an anthology of seven stories about the kinds of people who can only get what they need from shadowy places. Dangerous Urges starts with a modern tale of abuse, primal lusts, and recovery and ends with ancient Roman nobles with tastes more depraved than Caligula’s. In between these, you’ll encounter grave robbers, shark fanciers, mad patriarchs, eldritch abominations, and even a relatively ordinary necrophiliac. Follow Konrad Hartmann down a dark alley, and see what he has to show you back there. We promise you an unforgettable experience. Beyond that… You can’t say we didn’t warn you.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Tartarus Eric Andrews-Katz

1) What can I say I really enjoyed this story.  The Setting was sharp and grounded.  The Plot was well thought out and easy to follow, I may not have agreed with all his plot choices but he put a ton of work into the plot and the story so it was enjoyable.  The characters were strong and interesting and I loved that they were all older and not your typical 20 somethings.  That was a great choice on his point.  Showing that you don't have to be young to have an adventure. When it comes to the writing style the narrative was easy to follow even with all the references to mythology.  I would totally read this story again.
2) Bit of a boring start for me, but it soon picked up. I had to keep reading to find out what the hell was going to happen.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Our Secret Wedding (SHS #1) H.J. Perry

1) A great introduction of a new author to me.  I really like her writing style even though some of the English terms she uses are confusing to my American brain.  The reader sees both points of view of the men, so you are never left wondering what the other is thinking. Being a short story means the love story happens quickly, like being in a whirl wind.  The long drawn out agnst isn't there where the characters split before coming together again.
2) I loved this story. The plot flowed nicely, the setting was an interesting one, and the writing style was engaging. Connor and Lee were very interesting characters to read. This is not the traditional friendship where close friends become lovers. No, the friendship is a bit one-sided, with Connor going all in and Lee keeping parts of himself hidden. The friendship grows as the relationship develops and I liked the maturity of the characters. I personally dislike when grown men act like moody teens, and this was not the case for his story. Every decision was made by an adult, and I loved how they dealt with everything. Great romance read for me.

At twenty-nine years of age, sexy scaffolder Lee is looking for love and commitment. He’s not about to hook up with any straight guy who’s going through a gay experimental phase. Especially not his work colleague, Connor.

But why involve the lynx Trace in their maneuvering? Finding the culprit won’t be easy, and it will mean building trust—a slow and difficult prospect for someone who’s suffered as much as Trace. Finding a way to move beyond the past, and to love, before those out to finish Sasha can destroy either, is a race the two fated hearts have to win.
