In memory of Alexandra Ripley

In 1972, Ripley published her first book, "Who's That Lady in the President's Bed?" under the pseudonym B.K. Ripley, and followed it up with half a dozen historical novels, including "Charleston," "The Time Returns" and "A Love Divine."

In the early 1990 the estate of Margaret Mitchell selected her to pick up the stories of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler where Mitchell left them in 1936, the year her saga of the Civil War was published.

''There are two reasons why I'm doing this book,'' she said in an interview in the reference work Contemporary Authors. ''I can't resist it, and as soon as this is done I will be able to write anything I want to. I really don't know why Scarlett has such appeal. When I began writing the sequel, I had a lot of trouble because Scarlett is not my kind of person. She's virtually illiterate, has no taste, never learns from her mistakes.''

The Devil's Fire by Sara Bell

Do you know the meaning of Savage Romance? I always identify this type of romance with a story which tells about a fiery and witty heroine, usually of noble birth, and an rough but handsome warrior, usually a bastard but who holds honor above all the virtue. Usually they are forced to an arranged marriage by the father of her, who is aging and who wants for her daughter a fitting groom. Doesn't matter if the groom is wealthy, what it is important is that he is an able warrior. Usually they cordially hate each other at first glance but there is a burning passion between them that can't be denied. Usually too stubborns to admit it, they vow to not consumate the marriage, but the noble warrior is soon consumate himself by desire. Usually the witty bride threatens to annul the marriage and so the warrior sets himself to make the threat null in the only way possible...

Well all this is respected in this novel by Sara Bell, but this is only half the romance. On the other half there are other "classical" situations which make this a very fastpacing, very romantic and very classical romance. With only a twist: the witty heroine is a handsome prince, Alric, and the stubborn warrior is a prince himself, Gareth. But in the fantasy medieval world of Orielle, same sex marriage are considered at the same level of eterosexual ones, so this novel lacks at all of the denial and hidden aspect of forbidden love among men.

The plot is very well planned and touches all the "essential" points to be a "classical" medieval romance. Plus there are some touches of magic, not to overwhelming, just a taste that is not bitter in a fantasy environment like this. Sex is present, but not too present, which is another classical point in this type of romance: the main story is the fight between good and evil, and sometime, it amuses the readers with a bit of sexual interaction between the goods.

The main characters are soo nice and handsome guys that they could give you a nervous fit if you are one who loves the bad boy type. But well, they are right for the role they play.

I have the clear feeling that Sara Bell is very familiar with Kathleen E. Woodiwiss or Johanna Lindsey's books (The Wolf and The Dove or Defy Not the Heart...) and if not, and the reader loves this type of romance, he should read this one, cause I think he will be very satisfy.

Five (Bad?) habits...

I was NOT tagged by [profile] maximvanziel to do it, but he has asked if someone is willing...:

A.list five habits/quirks/facts about yourself
B.tag five people to do the same

1) This is maybe my best known habits among my friendlists, cause I write often about it: I avoid physical contact with stranger. And sometime also with not stranger. It's stronger than me, I avoid to sit near people if I can (I always let free a sit on the metro if it's between two other occupied sit).

2) I hate phones, mobile, skypee everything that allow me to have voice contact with people. I don't like it. And I hate when people reach me through mobile and skypee when I don't want to be reached.

3) When I'm in not mood people must avoid to contact me, I can be very nasty and sometime I react also in physical way. I usually am not a violent person, but if my mind is in turmoil, I bite.

4) I collect evening gown and cocktail dress. And jewelry. And sexy lingerie. I have quite a bit of a collection and most of them I have never had the chance to wear. But they are soooo pretty.

5) I'm not sexual repressed but I have the good girl face so my partners always think to shock me if they are a bit demanding... and since I'm shy I have never said them they are wrong...

I will not tag other people since I for first wasn't tagged, but if people want to do it...

The Good Thief by James Buchanan

Well I think this book is my preferrend among James Buchanan's books I have read.

Caesar is a "good" thief: he is a burglar but he is a good guy inside. From the Ispanic side of the city, like a lot of guy like him he hasn't had a chance to become a good next boy door. From little thefts to big housebreaks the step is short and it passes through some convictions. But Caesar is also a very handsome guy. So he has his share of adventures and one of them leads him to Nate, a fair hair All American Boy he meets at a party.

Caesar has always had one night stands or little more (for him a long relationship is a guy who lasts three appointments) and so he delves into the chance to spend one night with Nate. But when the morning after he finds out that Nate is a cop, he leaves in an hurry. But then an accidental encounter with Nate leads to another hot sex session. And two. Nate is quickly becoming a long last relationship...

So when Caesar, during one of his "cleaning home work", finds some child pornography material, he can't ignore the thing and the first person he searches for help is Nate. But Nate is a cop and he has to do the right thing, and Caesar is a thief...

Caesar is the classical bad boy you can't resist. He sweats sex from every pore and he is also very nice (he has a very cute little dog who helps him to play the role of bad boy with heart). He doesn't hesitate a bit to do the right thing, even if it could be the wrong thing for his life. He is funny and has a easy way to approach life, but he is not selfish.

Nate is the good boy. Right family, right side of the street, maybe not a "straight" guy, but he has a family which supports him (even if we can read a bit of tension with his father, ex-cop). He doesn't hide his homosexuality, but he doesn't flaunt it. He works out, so when his colleagues see him, they see a big and tought man, and nobody has the courage to trouble him. But he can't prevent what is said behind his shoulders... and he heard them. So he is not at all easy with his sexual life, but he can't deny what he feels for Caesar, it's a too strong feeling. And like a good boy he doesn't hide nothing.

I like both Caesar then Nate, but maybe I have a soft spot for Nate, this big guy who is so sure of himself that has no problem to be a total bottom in bed, but only in a sexual way, cause Caesar and Nate are two very balanced characters in the day to day life.

The plot is a good mix of detective story, funny elements (don't miss the dog), good and health sex, and romance.
