Missing: Jo-Ann Power

Take a lifelong East Coast girl, drop her deep in the heart of Texas, and you get a gal with a yen to spin a yarn about the two places she knows best. Jo-Ann Power, who used to work in the nation’s capital, began to write Missing Member after she moved to San Antonio in 1996. Creating a spunky congresswoman in a heap of trouble, Power realized she could tell a tale—with a tall, dark, handsome hunk—and chuckle as she wrote. Missing Member is her first novel in the Me & Mr. Jones series—and the second, Baring Arms, debuts November 11, 2008.

Power began her career writing fact. As a freelancer, she learned that readers want to understand an issue quickly, easily and with a bit of entertainment to boot! That meant she could write about anything that intrigued her—and much did. She has learned—and so have her readers—about everything from financial services products and trends, medical advancements, historical events and biographies, female body-builders, artists and…yes…cigar manufacturers to social issues and the challenges to being published, in fiction and in non. As a result, her non-fiction credits include many mass market national magazines, as well as major metropolitan newspapers.

Now, every month, she also writes a syndicated column about the publishing world in a regional Texas arts and entertainment magazine. Here, she describes the writing life, issues in literacy, publishing as a business, the rise of e-books and audio books AND she interviews many of her author friends and colleagues. The column is titled—what else?—“Power of Words!” and can be read at www.hillcountryexplore.com.

Secret Santa by Sean Kennedy

Zach and Shane are a young happy couple and this will be the first Christmas Zach will bring Shane home to meet his family. With all the other boyfriends Zach has never bothered to do so, since he knew that they weren't the One. But Shane is different, Zach knows that he loves him and that they will be always together, even if now, for the last of Christmas shopping, Shane is not with Zach. Truth be told Shane lately was pretty absent and Zach is wondering till the time he sees a very strange Santa in a department store, a Santa with Shane's eyes.

I like the story since it's both sweet and naughty. The first part in which Zach retells how he realized that he loves Shane is really tender, it was not a conscious realization, but almost an epiphany. The second part, with Zach harassing Shane in Santa Claus dress is so naughty that it's a real pleasure to read.

Zach and Shane are easy and full of life, they are really in love, but in a way I feel them as a "normal" couple; their love is not a rollercoast of feelings and so, I feel it more steady and long term fated than a full passionate love story. But don't get me wrong, the naughty part of the story is sexy and erotic. The only open point I have for the story, is Shane's profession: I believe he should be an actor or something, otherwise I can't imagine how he can be a Santa Claus only for the Christmas season without making Zach too suspicious.

The Boys in the Band (1970) directed by William Friedkin

Director: William Friedkin

Writers: Mart Crowley (play)
Mart Crowley (screenplay)

Release Date: 17 March 1970 (USA)
November 2003 (Italy - Festa per il compleanno del caro amico Harold - Turin Film Festival)

Genre: Drama

Tagline: "The Boys in the Band" ...is not a musical.

Plot: A sensitive yet humorous adaptation of the stage play, this 1970 film directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) is one of the first films to openly address gay issues in a matter-of-fact style that largely avoids stereotyping. Shot on one set and featuring a birthday party as the festive setting, a group of friends assemble to celebrate, reminisce, and discuss their lives and the travails of being gay, even as one friend insists he's straight. The night turns from a light celebration to a sometimes-vindictive ordeal of revelation and betrayal, as each man in turn must confess his true feelings. Performed by the original cast of the stage production, the film may feel dated to some, but it still manages to be truthful and entertaining as it explores a subject that to this day is not often addressed. (Robert Lane)

Awards: 1971 Golden Globe Nomination as Most Promising Newcomer - Male (Kenneth Nelson)
1971 Golden Laurel Award (3rd place) as Star of Tomorrow - Male (Cliff Gorman)
1971 Golden Laurel Nomination (4th place) as Star of Tomorrow - Male (Leonard Frey)

When Harry Met Jason by Sean Michael

The first in the Between Friends series (even if not the first to come out) is the story of, as the title says, when Harry met Jason. Jason is a post graduate student; he wants to be a teacher and he is quite a dreamy guy: he dreams of prince charming and knight in shining armor. His dreams come true when he meets Harry. Harry is a police officer who finds Jason to a party: they were called over since someone spiked the beverages with drugs, and Jason is one of the victim. Unable to have coherent answers from Jason, Harry decides to take him home, and from the morning after their relationship starts in a very easy way, even if Harry asks to Jason to wait before moving the relationship on a sexual level, he wants to be sure and to wooing Jason a bit before... a man who behaves like a knight in shining armor is the best for Jason who willingly decides to be chaste for a bit.

Before meeting Harry, Jason was living with Sammy in a friends with benefits relationship; they never took their relationship seriously since both Jason than Sammy knew that they were searching something different in a partner. But they are really good friends, and sometime they help each other in an almost stress relief sex; nothing too serious, some hand jobs and blowjobs, but never anything else. And when Jason starts his relationship with Harry, he maybe would consider to stop for good,  but Sammy is having a lot of trouble with a stalker a man who treated him pretty bad and now the last thing he needs is to loosing also his buddy friend Jason.

As usual there is a lot of sex in the story, but in comparison to other books I read by Sean Michael, in this one the plot has a main role, and the sex is only a nice side part. Actually the interaction between Harry and Jason, and Jason and Sammy is quite interesting, since, even if Jason brings on his "odd" relationship with Sammy, I never felt that he was cheating on Harry or similar, above all since Harry was aware of all and very understanding. I'm now very interesting in reading Sammy's story, since both him than Jason are really sweet characters and Sammy in particular is cute and tiny, fragile but not weak, a really charming character: in a way, he stole the scene to both Jason and Harry. As for them, Jason is a little firecracker, good-hearted, open and friendly; Harry is the typical cop hero, strong, steady and caring.
