Feral by Joely Skye

Joely Skye's shapeshifter are not the usual strong men and women of the paranormal romances, more often than not they are renegade shapeshifters, with a troubled past and with a lot of behavioral issues.

In Feral we have two example of them; Ethan is a shapeshifter cougar and one of the last of his breed. Ethan's past is not so clear, from clue here and there, we can understand that he lost his mother when he was still a child and managed to become an adult living more or less on the streets. Apparently Ethan was a cute boy and sought the help of older man, he bartered his body for a warm meal and a place where to stay; Ethan was wise even then, and he only chose nice men, who didn't treat him. At some point, it's not clear how and when, he began a relationship with a female werewolf, even her older than Ethan, a former friend of his long lost mother. Actually I didn't understand if it was a sexual relationship or not, but for sure it was a close bond, and Lila, the woman, was killed by her pack for this reason, and that same pack tortured Ethan before he managed to escape. After that traumatic experience, Ethan chose his animal side and now it's 8 years that he is prowling the woods as a cougar.

He is not bothering noone, but Doug, an Alpha male of a wolf pack has some hidden reasons (also them not quite clear), to hunt down and capture "feral" shifters. Ethan is his last prey and he manages to take him captive with the help of Bram. Bram is a werewolf of the same pack that previously tortured Ethan, but he was only a 16 years old boy back then, and an outcast himself. He doesn't agree with his Alpha's idea, but Bram is an omega inside the pack and so the last who can say something in the matter. Plus Bram is gay, and he has not a mate: the Alpha Male, Doug, uses him like a boy toy, and Bram's quite submissive nature let him doing so.

They are an odd couple these two: Ethan a lonely man for nature, who thinks at sex more like barter money than something connected to feelings, and Bram, an animal pack till his core, who sees sex like the only moment when he is allowed to feel something. It will be not simple for them to connect on a common ground, and I don't feel like Bram will overcome all his inner issues... or maybe he has nothing to overcome since being a submissive is his true nature. Anyway, Ethan doesn't want and will not take on the role of Alpha for Bram, he will only allow Bram to be his fellow companion during the path.

The story is part of a common universe, but it's not strictly connected to the other books, you can read it as a stand-alone book without problem. The author writes M/M romance in this universe with the name of Joely Skye, and het romance with the name of Jorrie Spencer. Most of the supporting characters in the book are previously appeared in other books, and so if the reader questions about them, he can probably find some answers reading the previous novels, but still I have the feeling that both Ethan than Bram's past was not fully developed or explained. Great part of Ethan and Bram's problems are legacy of their upbringing and so I wouldn't have minded to have a bit more of an insight on it.

The nice aspect of the book is that it's quite "touchy" feeling, there is a lot of nuzzling and cuddling, and hugs and comfort... it allows the reader to "feel" the characters, above all to feel their fragility.

The Inside Reader: Ginn Hale

Show me the books he loves and I shall know the man far better than through mortal friends - Silas Weir Mitchell
What I like most of the Inside Reader series is that, in each list, you can really see the author. Some of them are classical, some innovative, some particular... Ginn Hale's list is something absolutely out of the ordinary, like her books. I think that many of you will look to these books, even if they are not exactly your usual cup of tea!

Ten of my Favorite Non-Fiction Books from Ginn Hale.

I realized that there was no way could pick just ten of my favorite novels-there are simply too many excellent authors out there-and many of the books I would cite have already been listed by other authors numerous times. Though, I would say that most readers will have a good time with works from, Josh Lanyon, Nicole Kimberling, Astrid Amara, Jim Grimsley, and the lovely Marjorie M. Liu. But, for the sake of variety I thought I would mention some titles that are often missed on top ten lists, but which I feel are great reads.

1) Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine. Thanks to Adams´ humor and grace, a book documenting what may be the last days of many strange and beautiful species is a pleasure. And unlike other books, it inspires a reader instead of simply leaving one feeling hopeless in the face of impending extinctions. It´s also worth noting that a re-visit to the book and its subjects has come out under the same title, (Last chance to See), though this time the charming Stephen Fry has taken up Adams´ role as co-author to Mark Carwadine. Both are well worth your time.

"Very funny and moving...The glimpses of rare fauna seem to have enlarged [Adams'] thinking, enlivened his world; and so might the animals do for us all, if we were to help them live." --THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD. Join bestselling author Douglas Adams and zooligist Mark Carwardine as they take off around the world in search of exotic, endangered creatures. Hilarious and poignant--as only Douglas Adams can be--LAST CHANCE TO SEE is an entertaining and arresting odyssey through the Earth's magnificent wildlife galaxy.

2) A Gap In Nature by Tim Flannery and Peter Schouten. This is a book of astounding illustrations, depicting recently extinct creatures. The original paintings were life-size and the printed images are grand and beautiful. It´s almost impossible to look through the pages of this book and not feel as if you are visiting an alien world, filled with laughing owls and marsupial tigers. And of course it´s heartbreaking to realize that such an exotic world was once our own. Nothing will bring these lost species back to us but I could not imagine a more moving memorial for them.

About Ginn Hale: Ginn Hale spent her early childhood living in a small cabin above a California commune utterly unaware of the modern world only fifty miles away. Upon discovering technological miracles of electricity, running water, the flush toilet and tape she swore never to forsake them-though she admits that, like an occasionally lapsing alcoholic, she sporadically drifts from civilization to live like a wild thing.
She attended the University of Northern Colorado as well as Denver University and has tramped through all 31 states of Mexico on botanical expeditions. Later she plunged through the wilds of Heathrow Airport, discovering the locations of nearly every bookstore while hunting elusive and often overbooked flights to Paris. She now lives in Bellingham Washington where she writes fantasy and science fiction and donates blood just for the fun of it.

Wicked Gentlemen is Ginn´s first novel. It was a Lambda Literary Award finalist and won the 2008 Spectrum Award for best novel.

Carol of the Bellskis by Astrid Amara

Carol of the Belliskis is probably one of the best romantic comedy I read lately. It starts with a breakup though. Seth and Lars are one years old lovers and everything seems perfect between them as the reader can understand from the first sentences, a very hot and lyrical sex scene, a sex scene that says and describes everything without using any “naughty” word. But it’s not all roses in Paradise, Seth and Lars are also colleague, Lars is a partner layer in the firm where Seth is a paralegal, but Lars is not out at work, and so he treats Seth like a stranger, worst like someone that it’s not at his same social level.

From this moment on the fight of the reader starts: to whom he has to give his support? To Seth that is madly in love with Lars and would like to scream it at the world? Or to Lars that is perfect in every detail, as lover and boyfriend, other than at work? It’s an hard fight since both of them have their reason.

Seth is really in love with Lars, but I think he has also some self-esteem issues. He projects his insecurities with other people, especially at work, to Lars and he sees Lars not recognizing their relationship at work like a way to not value him both as a person than employee. It’s true that he wants Lars to come out to be free to completely love him, in every moment of his life, but I think that it’s also true that he wants it as a proof that he is a valuable person, and in this second aspect he is a bit selfish in forcing Lars out of the closet.

On the other hand it’s maybe time that Lars takes a stance in his life: he is a successful layer, he is half-owner of the firm, and he is probably overestimating the consequences of coming out. Plus, refusing to leave for their week holiday only one day before, after promising he would have gone, it’s not exactly a nice choice to prove his love to Seth. True, he tries to make amends almost immediately, helping Seth with the management of his relatives’ B&B and at the same time wooing Seth in a very romantic way, accepting his grumpy attitude and patiently waiting for Seth to change his mind on the breakup.

I also like that, in the end, both of them realize that the solution of all is to compromise, but they take the same decision separately: both of them arrive to the conclusion that their love is to great a thing to not fight for it. No one of them asks to the other to renounce to something and both of them would have been willing to step back from their decision for the sake of their relationship. This is a thing that talks of real love.

One thing I particularly noticed is the perfect mix of romantic and sweet love story with hot and naughty sex scenes, the best type of all: the two of them don’t spend all their time in a sex marathon, but when they decide to “get dirty”, it’s definitely quality time, for them and for the reader.
