1) Just from reading the blurb, I figured I'd be in over my head in no time. And I wasn't wrong. There are straights, gays, and bisexuals here, a glorious rainbow of orientations and polyamory. And yet they all somehow seem to gel. Fascinating. The writing flows well, the pace could be tighter, the dialogue is realistic if not altogether necessary all the time, and the characters feel real with their emotional and sexual baggage, tying them all together. There are also some important, current, heavy issues dealt here, like sexual and gender confusion, bisexuality, teen suicide, prejudice and discrimination, etc. Despite that, though, sometimes it felt like people had already been through the same discussion, so it got a little repetitive. The polyamorous relationship wasn't turned into a spectacle or lurid erotica. These were real people trying to manage their feelings for each other. All in all, an interesting twist on the old romance theme.

Being part of an Olympic skating pair should be excitement enough for one life, but for Erika that's only the beginning. Her skating partner, Tom Alan, is her ex-husband, who fell in love with former British ice dancer Milo, and all three of them live together and raise her daughter, whose father is Erika's ex-boyfriend, Bill, a rabid hockey fan who is old friends with Milo.

1) This is a story that while can obviously be read as a standalone book. I’d like to go back and read the other books in this series. I quite enjoyed the read.

A.M. Arthur Their Life As They Live It (Perspectives #4)

“Happiness is not a goal…it is a by-product of a life well lived.”
--Eleanor Roosevelt

Bernard “Bear” Henson is a blessed man. He is happily married to the love of his life, he co-owns a successful business, and his grown son is desperately in love with a wonderful partner. But Bear knows all too well how precarious that happiness is, so he lives every day with love in his heart and gratitude for everything he has—especially his husband Richard Brightman. Richard has been HIV-positive for thirty years and every new day is a gift.

When Richard becomes unexpectedly ill and is rushed to the hospital, Bear braces for his beautifully constructed life to come crashing down. A hard-won life full of ups and downs, illnesses and setbacks, love and anger, and a lot of regret for how certain things went down. Certain things involving Bear’s alcoholic ex-wife Debbie and the start of Bear’s relationship with Richard. But the past can’t be changed, only remembered and studied.

As Richard fights for his life, Bear reflects on the last thirty years of their entwined lives. College days, his shotgun wedding to Debbie, his unexpected feelings for Richard, and the proudest moment of Bear’s life: the birth of his son Gabriel. Bear’s life with Richard is woven with love, heartache, regret, joy, and everything else in between. They’ve overcome every obstacle that’s come their way, and they’ll overcome this new illness, too. Period. Bear simply isn’t ready to live his life without Richard in it.

Note: This is the fourth book in my Perspectives series, and while it can be read as a standalone, readers will have a much richer concept of these characters if you’ve at least read book two, The World As He Sees It. Warnings for spousal abuse (not between the two heroes) and cheating.

1) A beautiful piece of fiction that does some wonderful things with fear and prejudice, exploring where they come from and how they can rot a society from within. Peopled with wonderful characters, sparkling dialogue, and glorious moments of magic, it also does something really exciting with the fluidity of gender and sexuality.

THE COBBLER'S SOLELESS SON - Everyone expects Renart Walker to follow in his mother's footsteps and become the cobbler for their little demon-ruled town. That'd be the proper thing to do: keep his head down, live his quiet human life, and try not to get too involved with demons. But Renart has never been terribly concerned with proper, and he isn't interested in a quiet life. His interests are a little more ambitious: he's aiming to catch himself a demon prince. As a human, he'd never be allowed to even get close to Prince Hrahez. The only solution is to make a bargain with a demon, and everyone knows what they want. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and he's got a plan—but it involves tricking a demon. If it doesn't work, nobody in town would want to be in his shoes. BEHIND BARS - The city of Dolana has kept itself free from demonic rule the hard way: by interrogating its citizens and sending anyone who could possibly be under demonic influence to the Inquisition. City innkeeper Pelerin is happy to help out however he can—after all, he lost his beloved wife to demons many years earlier, leaving him to raise their son on his own. If anyone deserves to have a grudge against demons, it's him. But when his now-adult son disagrees with his actions, he is forced to reexamine the past. Is he doing the right thing, when it could lead—has led—to the deaths of innocents? Why is his son skulking about, and what secrets is he keeping? And while Pel's hands are full with this, a stranger comes to stay at his inn... a stranger who makes the question more relevant than Pel ever imagined would be possible.

1) I loved this story. I hadn’t read the other stories in the series that preceded this one, but I didn’t need to: there was enough conflict, passion and suspense to keep me turning the pages. Well done!
