I'm not really sure The Crying Game should be listed as gay themed movie, even if, as usual, when there is the minimum hint at homosexuality, the media play along with it with big fanfare. I think the main theme of The Crying Game is the political situation, the IRA; that was an era, when the movie came out, when this theme was hot and the movie industry was searching for all side of the story. Dil (Jaye Davidson)'s character got caught in the middle of all of it, I don't want to say that the character was used to divert attention from the real meaning of the movie, but I think that, in the end, that was the effect. In any case I liked how the director decided to approach the theme, and Fergus's reaction to Dil's real identity is right.
Then if we think to the actor behing the role, Jaye Davidson, he was tailored for this role, and this is probably a case where the role makes the actor and not viceversa. For this reason, we need to respect his desire to go back behind the scene, I only hope the money he got for Stargate will allow him to have a good (and quiet) future.

Gay themed or not...I quite enjoyed this movie, enough to buy it from the shop to add to my collection

This is a top high quality movie, so it's a diamond star for any gay themed movie collection.

True, the first part of the movie is so sad that me myself was really thinking, why am I here in a theatre? I was lucky enough to see it in the theatre when it was first out.

An excellent movie. I enjoyed it tremendously in the two times I saw it plus a cut-up version on TV. But a definite must see.

We've seen this on the BBC (full, uncut and brilliant) and in the totally faffed about version on US TV whgich took out some of the subtlest bits.

Stunning film.

I loves this film. I often wonder what happened to Jay Davidson after Stargate. This was a terrific role for him.

Awesome movie! And I agree with you, Jaye Davidson was perfect for this role. :)

He is a fashion attendant and he went back to his previous job, in London I believe.

I think they cut the role on Jaye, so he was the only possible choice ;-)

What's a fashion attendant?

sorry, I meant "fashion assistant"

Awww, this is an old love of mine:) Outstanding performances and excellent and suprising twist that makes you sit up and take notice.

Just had to say that because seeing this post made me want to watch it all over again after many years:)

Thanks!

I cannot believe that I haven't seen this movie! I was saddened when Jaye Davidson left the business, but it just didn't seem to be for him. Loved him in Stargate. Sometime in the near future I need to catch up on my movie watching.

It's not often that we have great performance, good direction and original plot all together

This is his first movie. After the success (and the Oscar nomination) he wanted to retire but they offered him 1 million for Stargate... but in the end, he took the million, made the movie and retired after that.
