The Protector by N.L. Gassert

Mason Ward is not our classical all action-no word hero. A former ranger, now security specialist, he lives in a boat and he is a controlled hygienist: he eats only natural things, he doesn't drink alcohol, makes a moderate use of sugar and exercises everyday to impossible early hours.

So when an FBI friend asks him to protect a spoilt brat like Soren Buchanan, the son of the notorious business man James "The Smile" Buchanan, Mason is not at all happy of the mission: Soren is a younger of ten years man who has never done anything in his life, and with the reputation of moleste drunkness. But he was badly beaten by his father and he asked protection to FBI with the promise to reveal something really interesting to the authority.

And so Mason takes Soren in, and since the first time he meets the guy, he is taken: Soren is a red-head with a porcelan complex, right the type he likes, even in women than in men. Since Mason has finally admit that he prefers men over women, and this guy is exactly the type of man he can fall in love with.

Soren is not at all happy to be confined in a small boat with a man like Mason: they are at totally opposite for character, but Soren has to admit that he is intrigued by Mason, above all in a physical way. Soren has never had before homosexual experience, but he would be very glad to start with Mason.

The story is original in the way that both characters are not as the usual suspence-thriller characters you find in this type of romance. Mason is not a tought man that seems to be unaffected by bullets and with no apparent feelings. Soren is not the usual weak boy who needs a protector of his own. Soren is the son of an abusive father, and he searches escape out of his nightmare in alcohol and drugs. But even when faced with reality, he still loves his father and can't bring himself to betray him.

Plus the story is more a romance than an erotic novel. Sex is not the main event of the story, and even if we have our two or three sex scenes, they are well intertwined in the story and don't steal the scene to the main story.

An enjoyable story, I read it in a session... maybe I'd like it to be a little longer, but still is a good discovery.

BWA (Book Whore Anonymous) Bulletin

In one of my umpteenth addictive crisis, I made the following order, which arrived yesterday:

As you can see there are a mix of novels and graphic novels... since I like the yaoi manga mostly for the graphic, it's impossible for me to really enjoy it if I haven't the comic for real. And then there are some print novels that I can't find in ebook format, and one (Heaven Sent 2) that I like so much in ebook that I buy it also in print (and then the new cover by P.L. Nunn is wonderful...).

For the recs, one I have just read, The Protector, and the others will arrive shortly.

Quod Tam Sitio by A.M. Riley

George is an anglican priest, Father George to be exact. He is 33 yd, blonde like an angel and with the soul of a child. He likes sacred music, but also modern musical, and he has an offical church chorus, but also a totally gay chorus, since Father George is also gay. But even if in his mission, he is savior and clever, when he comes to love he is like a 14 yd girl to her first crush. He day-dreams of dangerous man with handsome feature. And his last obsession is the young guy who sets on a bench in the park in front of the chapel while he is directing the chorus.

Dominick is an 800 yd vampire. He is a real and deadly vampire, he kills when he eats and he does that without regret. But he is irrimediably drawn to the sacred music he listen from the park in front of the chapel and he is also drawn by the fair priest. Cause Dominick is a former monk, born to sing and worship God, and dead with the curse to not be never again able to speak the sacred words.

George is a very complex character: apparently he is all good manners and open and clear soul, but he has hidden shades he will unveal loveing Dominick. George is not the square good boy and fortunately A.M. Riley has not decipted him like a too perfect character, cause it would cause him to be less nice. Instead I find him intriguing, and tender at time, but also appealing.

Dominick is an "old style" vampire, beautiful outside, but deadly inside. Reading him I had clearly in mind some scenes from the movie "Interview with the Vampire". Dominick is not an heroic character, he will not choose to redeem himself cause he is repentant for his past, but cause he is falling in love for George: he is less noble for this reason? I don't think so.

Quod Tam Sitio is a story with a bit of horror taste, but I like that it didn't indulge in the macabre, and that, in the end, the resolution of all is more simple than what you would expect.

Very good reading, another perfect story by an author who, till now, has given me very good stories.

Like U by Laura Carboni

This is a yaoi made in Italy. Davide is the perfect good boy, he studies Laws at Bari University and lives alone in a small apartment. He has had bad experience with his former friends, and so he prefers to take care for himself and be as lonely as possible. But now he is smitten by a college mate, Catia, and he doesn't know how to draw her attention.

Valerio is another college mate of Davide, a very popolar guy, always surrounded by friends, like honey with bees. But he is also a nice guy and he decides to help Davide to change his looks, to conquer Catia's heart. But during the turning phase, Valerio begins to care a little too much for Davide, and also Davide loses the real scope of this adventure to begin to enjoy spending time with Valerio.

In the end both of them will have to reconsider their life and choices...

The story is almost an adult young story: Davide and Valerio exchange kisses like Peynet's fiancees, and the graphic novel, even if rated "adult only", is very chaste in comparison to its similar japanes works. But it's very sweet and the style is very strong, very different but original. It's good to see something so characteristic, made by an Italian artist.

Highly reccomended if you like your yaoi characters very "male" and less "feminine"

Like U is the original graphic novel which later was translated into English with the title Love Circles.
