In memory of Alice Borchardt

Alice Borchardt (October 6, 1939 – July 24, 2007) was a writer of historical fiction, fantasy, and horror. She lived in Houston and was sister of Anne Rice and aunt to Christopher Rice.

After a 30-year career as a licensed vocational nurse, Borchardt faced staff reductions at the hospital where she worked. Rice encouraged Borchardt, helped her find an agent, and wrote introductions to several of her books.

She was in her mid 50s when the first of her seven novels, Devoted, was published in 1995. She is perhaps best known for a trilogy about werewolves in medieval Rome. In The Silver Wolf, Night of the Wolf and The Wolf King, the orphaned Regeane and the nobleman Maeniel, both are part werewolf and part human, contend with bullying chieftains, embattled emperors and supernatural interventions. The last book in the series was published in 2001.

Behind the Cover: Anne Cain

Graphic artist Anne Cain has had a pencil in hand for just about as long as she can remember. Though most of her art is digital these days, she enjoys working in a wide range of mediums. Watercolors and oil paints are some of her favorites, but nothing beats a simple piece of paper and a pencil. She always carries around a sketchbook for ideas that come to mind while she’s on the road, later developing these sketches as possible illustrations or even covers.

After taking some journalism and art classes in college several years ago, Anne fell in love with the world of publishing and hasn’t looked back since. Since the summer of 2006, she has been a contributing cover artist for LooseId as well as a handful of other publishers. She has the most fun working on art for m/m books as well as paranormals and fantasies, two of her favorite genres.

An author as well as artist, Anne published the ChildsPrey series, the Dragon Disciple series and the Blood Brothers series co-written with Barbara Sheridan, and also some short novels, like the Pawprints series, by herself.

Anne loves different cultures, trying out new foods and learning a little bit from different languages. Fascinated with Asian mythology and pop-culture especially, she is a huge fan of anime and the Japanese music scene. Often, these two media influence her work and she’s happy to share her love for them.
