Bitter Love is a vampire story with a funny side. Amaretto is a two hundreds years old vampire with a conduct code: he never kills, he never sucks blood if not allowed and he doesn't commit. Being half-white and half-black (he said not African American, so I guess), he learnt earlier in his life what it means being different, and now that he is a vampire he is even more estranged from people than before. His sire was Henri, the ancient vampire featured in Currents, and Henri taught him that he can be a vampire without killing people; more he can bring pleasure to his lovers, and this is what he exactly does. Amaretto is a very good looking guy and he has also an easy and friendly behavior, he still remains in good relationship with all his past lovers... and they are a lot.
Leif is a wanna-be vampire slayer; his former lover Jack was killed by a vampire and so now Leif he has charged himself of the duty of killing all the vampires he can. But he taught himself through libraries and legends and so he really doesn't know nothing on how to kill a vampire, and instead he is easy prey for them. Amaretto takes sympathy on him and decides to help the man... the fact that Leif has angelic features and that he stirs every Amaretto sexual instinct it's only a bonus...
As I said, even if the story deals with murders and vampires, it has not an angst leit motiv. Amaretto is like many others clubbing animals, who prey on the "innocent" who want to be caught. He only goes after the ones who are clearly willing to be temporary donor, and only after they have agreed. The fact that Amaretto asks for blood, makes him a vampire, but if he asked only for sex, he would be like our usual womanizer or man eater. But I repeat, he is not a bad guy, he was only taught in the past to not trust love.
Leif is a bit naive. Of both vampires and men, apparently. And he is also a man easy to fall for a good looking guy like Amaretto, ready to overpass the "little" fact that he is a vampire, and so the very man he should kill. But killing a so beautiful creature would be a waste, better take him and never let him go! Joke apart, all this to say that Leif is not the usual cool and cold minded vampire killer, he is too emotional and good hearted to be. And so he needs the help of Amaretto, and he is ready to accept it when offered.
Bitter Love is an enjoyable and easy reading, not too complex but funny.
