Blood and Roses by Aislinn Kerry

Blood and Roses is a novella that I think will appeal to the most romantic readers. It’s fantasy, without doubt, but it’s not so clearly bounded by this genre. The world where Arjen, male whore, lives, is an Amsterdam lost in time; from some small details, the use of specific words, the absence of machines, the presence of carriages and other “old-fashioned” elements, all let you think that this is a fantasy world that takes inspiration from a not long ago past, maybe nineteen or eighteen century. Probably if not for the presence of a vampire, the novella could have been an historical romance, and even if there is the paranormal elements, truth be told, it tends to be more historical than other.

Maikel, the vampire, is like a lord among the other men. Again, there is a good reason for him to be a vampire, the author needed probably all the gothic feelings that derives from that fact, but other than that, he behaves more like an aristocrat than an otherworldly being. Him and also the other vampires in the novella, they live among the other people, worshipped and feared, but seldom loved. They are seen like a breed among the others, the lure to be a vampire, and the possibility to gain immortality with them, make this people favourite among the whores who all want to be the chosen one for the night.

All other than Arjen. But I don’t think that for him is really a question of moral or other, I think Arjen is a very proud man, with still a lot of dreams despite his job. He doesn’t want to be with a vampire probably since, if in the end all the legends weren’t true, it would be another disappointed in his life. Arjen has built a thick shell around himself, a shell that protects him from feelings and pains: he doesn’t feel when he is working, he doesn’t feel and so he doesn’t suffer. Having the chance to taste a bit of “paradise” with Maikel, and then being forced to be back to his everyday work as a whore, would be probably create an irreparable break in that shield.

At the beginning probably Arjen doesn’t love Maikel for who he is more than for who he represents. And so, truth be told, Arjen is not so much different from the other people. Instead I think that Maikel is open and loving from the first moment. He is clear in his desires even if he doesn’t speak them aloud. Maikel is probably as much romantic as Arjen, but he is more open to this side of him.

Blood and Roses is a retelling of the One Thousand and One Nights, with Maikel that night after night asks to Arjen to talk to him into sleep, delaying night after night the consummation of their agreement, till the moment I arrived to think that probably Maikel is not really interested in having sex with Arjen, sex is something he can have with everyone, what instead he has with Arjen is something special. And in the end, sex will cause them trouble, since it will level their relationship with all the previous one they had, letting Arjen doubt of Maikel’s words, and destroying Maikel’s image of Arjen. In a way, when Maikel sees Arjen, he doesn’t see a whore, he sees a man with a royal behaviour, he sees the simple things of life, the things he can’t no more appreciate. Being with Arjen, without sex with them, allows to Maikel to think that he isn’t different from all the other men.

Anyway, even when the sex arrives, it’s always almost ethereal, I liked very much the use of words of the author during that moment, she is able to convey completely the moment, and the eroticism, without being too explicit.

Slave to the Crown by Katica Locke

Mair doesn’t particular like the goblins, the people from his mother side, but they are the only family he has always known. Born from a rape his mother was subjected, she managed to escape and come back to her home, but then she discovered she was with a child. All her people told her to kill the baby, the bastard son of a fairy, but he was also her son, and she was the king’s sister, so her blood was enough to save him, almost. Many times goblins tried to kill Mair, once even his uncle, the king, but more or less he arrived to 23 years old unscathed but deeply alone. He is the spitting image of his father and so, where goblins are little, curved and with long horns, he is tall, lean, with a creamy complexion and two little wings he always hides. No one wants to be near him, other than his mother, and so he is not only alone, he also misses the human touch. And he hates his body, that is so different from what he is used to see around, and he hates sex, that he links to what happened to his mother.

When a turn of fate makes him the new king, Mair has to face many problem: first of all, everyone around him wants to kill him again, and second, has an healthy and young goblin, he is expected to have a sex slave to relieve him of his “needs”, and slaves are usually fairies. The one they brought to him is Zak, a music fairy that his now mute due to a bad wound. For any parameter Zak is a beautiful man, but for Mair he’s also a constant remember that he is not like the others. He is more like Zak.

There is a strange contraposition between Mair and Zak. It’s clear that Zak is stronger, not only in body but also in inner strength, but sometime I had the feeling that he didn’t want to fight back. It’s not clear if Zak was a warrior caught in battle, or if he was a slave even before, for sure at first he is scared by the situation but then maybe he realizes that Mair is not exactly the ugly and dangerous goblin king he was expecting. In that moment I had the clear idea that Zak chose to be with Mair, as a slave, not since he was forced but since he wanted.

The novel didn’t show us how Mair will manage to be the king of a bunch of people that want to kill him, but I don’t think it will be easy. Mair, truth be told, has not the streak to be a leader, he is too gentle and troubled. He has too inner fears, true they are more psychological than real, but in any case I think he is not even interested in being a king. Maybe the relationship with Zak will help him, being the master even of only a man, it could be a first step to strengthen him to a bigger task.

The master slave relationship is only hinted, also since Mair as I said is not exactly a real master, and so also the sex is more “simple” and basic than in a BDSM relationship. Mair is too scared of sex to do something really wicked to Zak, and Zak, I think, is way more experienced than Mair, to be able to lead the younger man, at least in bed.

What You Wish For by Alex Marcus-Jacobs

At the end of once more bad relationship, Jared, nickname Jaybird, is on despair to be able to find the right girl. And when a tarot card reader tells him that maybe he is not searching in the right place, that he has to go under a drastic change, Jaybird doesn’t exactly understand what she means. From what I understood, Jaybird comes from a very small town in deep Canada, and he has never once considered that maybe he is “different”. He did everything his parents expected from him, and another step in that path is to find the right girl and marry her. He has never considered that there could be another way for him.

But slowly Jaybird is taking his length from his parents’ expectations, and the first step was to choose Music instead of Business as college degree. Then he moved to a big city (or rather bigger than the one he was living in) and he made new friends. Many things are changing around him and maybe now he is more ready to see things from a different perspective. So when he enters by chance, and mistake, a gay club, and starts to chat with the owner, Nicol, he is maybe not ready for the offer he receives, but he is willing to consider it.

It’s quite funny, all Jaybird’s troubles in life and relationships are quite clear to a gay romance reader, but not to Jaybird, he has probably not the right background to understand them. It’s not only the gay thing, it’s also all the D/s’s implication; Jaybird is not able to have a right relationship with a woman since he is the one who would like to be dominated, and all the women he met in the past are a carbon copy of his own mother, probably a simple and nice woman, whose only interest was to raise a family and make happy her own husband… Jaybird is searching for a woman like that, since he was taught that is what he has to do, but deep inside himself, he would instead prefer to be that woman. He doesn’t want to be the one to take care of for someone else; he would like to be the cherished one. He wants someone to tell him what to do, when to do and how to do it. Not only in life but also during sex. Probably, if Jaybird was searching in the right place, he would have been some chances to find a woman like that, but it’s obvious that it’s not what he really wants.

I quite liked the hints on the possible future relationship between Jaybird and Nicol, not only the D/s is not so strong to be too much troubling for me, but I also have a soft spot for the May/December relationship, and between Jaybird and Nicol there is the right age difference, 10 years of something that give to Nicol the right skills to be Jaybird’s master. The story is too short to give you a full understanding of this new relationship, but there are good basis, and I think the author has in mind to write more.

On a side note, I also liked Jaybird’s persona in relationship with his friends and schoolmates. It gives the idea that Jaybird is really still a “baby”, not yet tainted by life. When he is down, being with his friends or playing videogames is still the main way to let it all go. He is living in a college dorm, he is still studying, but at the same time he is taking some life changing decision… Jaybird is in that moment of life when everything is still on stake, everything is still possible. This is probably the best and worst time of his life.
