Murder Above Fourth (A Nick Fallon Investigation 3) by J.P. Bowie

Already from the title, A Nick Fallon Investigation 3, reader understands that this is the third adventure of Nick Fallon, P.I. And here probably resides what can be a double blade side of the book: for who like me has not read the previous two books, all the references to the past cases of Nick and his colleague Jeff, all the bickering and jocking between Nick and his partner Eric, and Jeff and his partner Peter, are added bonus to the story. True sometime I felt like the one who was holding the candle, like I was intruding in their personal life, but solving the problem is easy, you can always read the previous two books! On the other side, if you already have, maybe being always reminded of what happened and when and with who, will it can be a little boring maybe, like you are listening for the nth time the same old story from a well known friend, and you can do nothing if faking an interested smile.

Said that, I need all the recap since it gave me the chance to understand better the dynamics between the characters, and above all between Nick and Eric; Nick is very protective of Eric, something that people would find almost oppressive if you didn’t know that Nick risked to loose Eric during one of his past cases gone wrong. Nick tends to not share his professional life with Eric, and again, if you didn’t know of Eric’s kidnapping (and from what I understood, he was also wounded), Nick’s behaviour would seem even uncaring, like he didn’t judge Eric at his same level, like Eric was only a pretty and cute boytoy to warm his bed.

This is probably the other aspect of the book that I really like: mystery novels tend to underestimate the sexy side of the characters; the PIs tend to be strong men always worried for the mystery and seldom “warmed” by the nice men they have by their side. The partner of a PI tend to be an handsome appendage and truth be told, the reader not always notice him, and maybe he is not even interested in noticing him. In J.P. Bowie’s novel, Nick Fallon has a private life, he goes out with his partner and his friends, he makes love, and the reader is made part of this side of his life, he has the chance to see Nick not only like the hot guy with the gun, but also like someone who is trying to have a normal inlive relationship with Eric. Again, even the little snippets of ordinary life, like finding Eric making breakfast, it is something that allows the reader to feel like the characters were more real. And last but not least, also the pretty explicit but never vulgar sex was good ;-)

The mystery than is not really a mystery, and indeed this is called an “investigation” not a mystery, so there is no really brain work for the reader to know who did what; again the story, all in all, was more ordinary than the usual mystery plots, and maybe even a little sad in the ending: like the author, I was a bit upset for the fate of one of the people involved in the investigation; I have the feeling that this one, like the other two books in the series, focuses on the lost chances of life.

And since you friends know that I LOVE to travel, here are two pics from my past travels:

Amazon: Spartacus International Gay Guide 2010 (Multilingual Edition)

Castro, San Francisco, in 2008... no, it was not an error, I searched for the light to come out exactly in the middle of the roof, and I liked also the combination of blue sky and blu windows

Provincetown, P-Town, in 2009... I did better postcard pics in P-Town, but this pic gives you the idea of the Hustle and Bustle of Commercial Street.

Firecracker by Jaye Valentine

Firecracker starts as a kinky tale and ends like a romantic romp. Isaac and Jeff are in a committed relationship but Isaac likes to play the field. But not behind Jeff’s shoulders, on the contrary, Jeff is even the one who plans everything to let Isaac play safe and sound. When Isaac does his kinky role play, Jeff is always there, enjoying the show but also being alert and avoiding danger. After all, Jeff is a cop and he knows how to protect Isaac.

I like the intake on the story that the author explains through Isaac’s words: both partners agreed to have an open relationship, even if, truth be told, all we see Isaac doing, is having oral sex with strangers in an alley and on a parking lot, he doesn’t go over that; from what I understood, it’s only Isaac that needs the “variety”, Jeff plays along to make Isaac happy, but he would be content also with the two of them alone. Isaac on the other hand, is not unaware of Jeff’s preferences, and when pressured from Jeff, he admits that, if it arrives the time when Jeff is no more comfortable with their agreement, he would be willing to stop it. As Isaac explains, what he does with strangers is no more of what he would do with a sex toys, the man attached to the sex toy is not important, and instead with Jeff is true love, and that is the most important thing. An example of that is Leo, who plays with them, but then he goes to sleep in the guest bedroom... like a toy they used and then put in his box... all right, Isaac is tender with him, he even kisses him goodnight, but nevertheless, the one with whom he goes to sleep is Jeff... sleeping together in their bed is way more intimate than having sex!

So yes, the novella apparently starts in a very unromantic way, daring to test the boundaries romance readers usually put, like exclusivity and no-cheating around, but in the end, Isaac and Jeff prove to be a very romantic couple indeed, and what they have is true love. Again, Jaye Valentine wrote a very “kinky” romantic story.

Call for Submissions: Dreamspinner Press

June 2010 Daily Dose

Editor: Lynn West

Lay down and close your eyes to dream this night.
A wolf is howling at the full gold moon;
the blood in your veins will begin to pound.
A nightmare will o'ertake you very soon--
vampires, werewolves, the ghosts that haunt the eaves
rise up to rent what joy they hunt and find.
But with the pulse, wild passion is aroused.
These handsome men will tease and flaunt and grind
against the things that go bump in the night.
At dawn the sun will rise and evil flees;
it leaves the well-known truth bare to the light:
night is shortest, hottest, in the summer,
and love will banish night's consuming fright.

Dreamspinner Press is seeking romantic M/M stories with an edge of suspense, a touch of heart-pounding fear, and/or a taste of the paranormal (ghosts, werewolves, spirits, etc.). This is not a call for horror content; they welcome a more tongue-in-cheek and lover-like approach to dealing with nightmares and small scares.

Length: 3,500 - 18,000 words (manuscripts shorter or longer will be considered but will have to be extraordinary)

Submission Deadline:March 15, 2010

Call for Submissions: Dancing Fools Press

What Dancing Fools Press is looking for: fractured fairy tales (e.g. about a princess who can rescue herself, a dragon that's not the bad guy, or a prince who would much rather stay home and read rather than seek his fortune; think along the lines of Jay Williams' "Petronella"). Stories should be between 15,000 and 20,000 words, should fall under the romance category (as opposed to erotica), and must stand alone. Happy endings are preferred, although hopeful endings will be considered. They're publishing two anthologies, one male/female and one male/male.

They're also looking for two front covers on the fractured fairy tale theme.

Finished story deadline: February 28, 2010. Accepted stories will be chosen by March 15, 2010.

Call for Submissions: Samhain Publishing

Red Hot Fairy Tales Anthology

How did Belle tame the wild Beast? Did the carriage turn into a pumpkin... or did Cinderella? And just what was going on with Snow White and those Dwarves?

Samhain Publishing is very pleased to announce an open call for submissions for a new, yet-to-be titled Summer 2010 anthology. They are open to any genre, M/F, M/M, or multiples thereof. They are looking for your super-hot take on the fairy tales we grew up with and… there must be a Happily Ever After.

The anthology will include novellas from 20,000 to 25,000 words in length and will be released individually as ebooks in August 2010 and in print in Spring 2011.

Submissions are open until February 1st, 2010 and final decision will be made by February 15th, 2010.

Steampunk Romance Anthology

Welcome to the world of clockwork pendants and steam locomotives, corsets and lace, dirigibles and difference engines. Yes, we’re talking about steampunk, where fantasy, history, technology and romance mix to create a glorious genre that looks at Victorian and Edwardian Era England and the American wild west through brass goggles.

Samhain Publishing is very pleased to announce an open call for submissions for a new, yet-to-be titled fall 2010 steampunk romance anthology. Don’t know what steampunk is? Think League of Extraordinary Gentleman and The Wild, Wild West. Even Joss Whedon’s Firefly and Serenity have steampunk elements transported into space. For more information about steampunk, you can check out the entry on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk.

They are open to M/F, M/M, or multiples thereof, any sexual heat level, and the romance must end happily ever after or happy for now.

The novellas must range between 25,000 to 30,000 words in length, no more, no less—please note, only manuscripts that fall in this word count will be considered for this anthology—and will be released individually as ebooks in November 2010.

Also, please be aware that, as a primarily romance publisher, they require all stories for this anthology to fit into the romance genre, complete with “happy ever after” or “happy for now” ending.

Submissions are open until April 30, 2010. No submissions will be accepted after this date-no exceptions. A final decision will be made by May 31, 2010.

Red Hot Winter Anthology

Does the thought of winter gives you the chills? How about a red-hot novella with a sexy hero (or two) to warm you up?

Samhain Publishing is very pleased to announce an open call for submissions for a new, yet-to-be-titled Winter 2011 Red Hot anthology. They are looking for winter-themed contemporary stories that are hot enough to melt the snow outside. They are open to having some paranormal elements, some suspense or comedy thrown in, as long as the stories are red hot! The anthology will include novellas from 20,000 to 25,000 words in length and will be released individually as separate ebooks in January 2011 and will be combined as one print title for Winter 2011 print release.

Submissions are open until June 1, 2010 and the final decisions will be made by June 30, 2010.

Binary Stars, Vol. 1 by Jack Greene

This is a collection of two short stories with the same common theme: jock meets nerd and they make passionate sex, the happily ever after is an option, but there are good chances that it will happen.

Security: Tyler is a young geeky scientist who likes to work late at night. Tyler is a pretty man, and he is gay, and he likes his sex on the rougher side, but he has not many chances to enjoy it. Oh, if he wanted, Tyler could have plenty of it, but Tyler is not a party animal, and actually he spends most of his nights at work. And then Tyler likes big and strong men but with a kind heart, not an easy combination to find. Tyler wants to feel physically mastered by his lover, but deep inside, he prefers to know that he is the clever of the two. Gideon, the night security guard who works at Tyler’s firm is perfect for the role: Gideon is hunky and handsome, but truth be told, he doesn’t give me the idea to be a really clever man; don’t get me wrong, he is not dumb, only that he knows that Tyler has a bigger brain than him, and that is not a problem. Gideon knows where his value lays, and he is plenty capable of using what nature gifted him, to Tyler’s great pleasure.

Hard Lessons: Tom, a college student, is asked to tutor Shawn, the star quarterback of the university, who probably is very good on the field, but not so good on algebra. Tom has nothing in particular against Shawn, other than the fact that Tom is plenty jealous of the cheerleaders who can have a taste of Shawn, and instead he has to look for afar and dream. Tom has never had the chance to be near Shawn, and so, when at their first meeting, Shawn comes out like a very nice guy, and comes out also in another way, it’s with great pleasure that Tom shifts from teacher to student to learn something Shawn knows better than him: Tom is a virgin, and Shawn is willing to help him cover his gap. It’s almost funny to see how Tom is almost greedy to drag Shawn in his dorm room to be debauched, I have the feeling that Tom’s virginity is not something he wanted to save ;-)

In both stories, reality is a bit stretched to fit the plot, Gideon't sexual proveness is quite unbelievable and even Tom's eagerness at his first time, and readiness, but well, I don't believe that being realistic was one of the goal of the author. I did enjoy the joy that both couples feel and express through sex.
