Bonding with Graven by Amber Kell

This was only a short story, and I had the feeling it was almost a drive test, like the author wanted to prove her hand on a possible longer novel and in the meantime she realized a teasing.

Steerl is the youngest son of the Emperor and he is supposed to be the chaperon for his sister who is going to meet her mate, the prince of Vampires. But when they are in the same room with the handsome prince, they discover there was a mistaken identity. Given that Steerl is gay and that Graven is really handsome, Steerl doesn’t object much.

The story is less than 20 pages, so other than boy meets boy and boy loves boy, nothing more happens, but Steerl is the perfect top from the bottom, all impertinence and a bit of spoiled brattiness in him; Graven is the perfect example of bored aristocrat who is only waiting for another game to start, and mating with his soulmate is the ultimate adventure.

It can be interesting to see if Amber Kell will continue or expand this one, the premise was quite good.

The Alpha’s Pet by Louisa Gough

I was ready to hate Rafe, the Alpha of this werewolf pack since I was considering him the reason why Gabriel and Blue, two young star-crossed lovers were not able to be happy. But actually Rafe seems to be the only one who is really having Blue’s good health and future in mind.

Blue is the omega of the pack, but he is not a cherished member of it; an orphan who Rafe welcomed in his home, Blue grew up with the feeling that he has to be the slaves of everyone without really belonging. He loves the pack, he above all loves Rafe, but he has not really an home with them.

In the pack there is a pretty “free” concept of relationships and sex, more or less everyone has sex with everyone, but some long-term relationships exist. And the relationships of the Alpha are not to be mixed up with; when Rafe introduces his new pet Gabriel, it’s pretty obvious that no Beta has to do a move on the beautiful young man. No one really care about Blue, since as the omega of the pack it’s unbelievable that he will dare to.

But when Blue sees Gabriel, and when Gabriel teases the young man, nothing will ever be the same. Now Blue has a reason to fight, not for a better place in the pack hierarchy, not for power or money, but for a chance to be with Gabriel.

Both Blue than Gabriel are so young and pretty that it was almost impossible to think to them together, if not considering the two more boys at play than really grown men. Even when they are together, they seem to be playing to be adults other than being really, and when they are alone, they cuddle on the couch and make out; only when an adult give them the go on, only then they will consume for real they love.

Now it would be not so strange if both, or at least one of them was innocent, but Blue is living in an almost free sex community, and willingly or unwillingly, he is having sex with various men, and Gabriel is a former hustler. So their not having sex, or better, not having immediately sex is done both out of respect for the Alpha, than, maybe unconsciously, as a demonstration that their love is not only about sex. Both Blue than Gabriel are pretty used to give their body without thinking much, sex is a barter, and a way to find shelter and protection, not much a way to prove your love. When they meet, they have to think to another way to connect, something that is only theirs.
