This was not an easy novel. Apparently a show business themed story with pretty boys wearing knee-high boots and eyeliner, it soon turned in a dark memoir about sex, drugs and rock and roll.

When the story starts, Milo is 12 years old and Liam 6. Milo has just realized that he prefers boys over girls and when he meets Liam, he recognized a soul mate in the little boy; this is probably one of the points in the book that let me more perplexed: while it’s quite understandable for a 12 years old boy questioning his sexuality, sincerely I think that 6 is a bit too early. True, Liam is a little genius, way ahead his peers, but still, the reason why Milo tags him as gay, his sensibility, his ever-so-slight lisp, probably is not enough reason.

Anyway, 12 years old Milo decides to become the protector of 6 years old Liam, both from the outside world than himself: Liam arrives to 18 years old that he is not only a spoiled brat but also totally unable to face the big bad world. And as soon as Milo, that is not so much older and experienced than him, do his first mistake, than Liam is all alone to face the consequences. And the consequences are very bad and hurting, to a level that brings Liam to the edge of suicide.

The starting point of the story is quite interesting, two very young boys, fated to be together, meet when both of them are too young to do something; it could have been a pink glasses perspective story, with a bed of roses waiting for them, and instead the author decided to turn it in a real life nightmare. It’s also almost a declaration on the importance of family and the support of parents: both Milo than Liam, for different reason, don’t have them, they are family and parents for each other, and of course they don’t have the right experience for being both. When they arrive to the beginning of their adulthood, they are more kids playing little home than real grown men ready for the future.

If a reader picks this novel with the idea to have a light story about pretty and cute rock musicians, he will have a surprise: there is a very heavy dark tone, and to no one is spared nothing. What Milo and Liam didn’t learn while growing up, they will learn in the worst way by direct experience in fast forward. This is not a pretty story, and in some points it left me wondering, but all in all, it was unique in its genre.

The Fallen Angels series is seriosly becoming an 101 course on catholic myths and legend; aside from some well know names, as Lucifer, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, most of the Heavenly and Fallen Angels that are introduced book after book are totally new to me.

This series then is not really something you can pick whenever you want, since each book is really only a chapter in a whole and unique story, and in each chapter you are given a little piece of a puzzle to complete. Plus in each chapter the main “lovers” are different and the reader has the chance to understand two things: that, in real and fantasy life, jealousy and love is what move the world and that ambition and betrayal unfortunately is very common.

From a plot that seemed mostly limited to the dynamics between the Angels, we are slowly understanding that there is a bigger purpose behind some actions; book after book Angels are taking position, and sometime only a love bind is what move them on one side or the other, not much a real political or moral belief. Moreover it also seems that all the pretty Angels are good and all the average one are bad… so the reader can easily understand with whom he has to take side: if the Angel has long and curly hair, beautiful eyes and colorful wings, than he is a good one.

This is probably the first example I read on a subgenre that is becoming quite popular, the “steampunk”. In an undefined Far West, probably end of the XIX century, beginning of the XX, Conrad is the spoiled son of a Governor; his father name and money always save him from the law: one day yes, and the other also, Conrad is in prison for buggery. Conrad’s great passion, other than men, is science, and in particular mechanics: he loves to inventing things that help him in finding pleasure, both physical than mental. Another thing that turns him away from women, other than not finding them attractive on a physical level, is that he doesn’t find them interesting on a mental level.

While in prison for yet another sexual escapade, Conrad meets Ezhno, a lonely Native American with a penchant for little invention: a body to die for with a mind that allows him to understand Conrad’s passion is a package the young man doesn’t want to lose, and so he convinces, or better forces his father to bring Ezhno home with them, like the actual spoiled brat he is; to Conrad Ezhno is yet another unusual pet, something that will distract him from his innate boredom.

Ezhno is not really attracted by the idea of living in a golden cage, but he likes Conrad; even if the young man thinks to be very clever, and to being able to manipulate his father, so is not for Ezhno. He follows Conrad since he wants the young man, and if in the meantime he is able to protect him from the bad world, and sometime also from himself, then he will kill two birds with one shot.

Sincerely there is nothing really realistic in this novella, even if it’s classified as historical; it’s more a fantasy tale in an historical setting; there is no reason why Ezhno is a Native American or why he is cultured and well-mannered, I suppose the choice to have him a “savage” was only since it’s sexier. And even if Conrad is wealthy and from an important family, in a real world he would not be able to escape from the law so easily. So if you want to enjoy this story, and indeed it’s naughty and enjoyable, you have to read it without precoceptions, and without searching to raise it above its nature: this is indeed a naughty romp about two men in fancy dress, with the help of unlikely sex machines.
