Nathan Jay "Nate" Berkus (born September 17, 1971) is an American interior designer and former daytime television host. He runs the Chicago interior design firm Nate Berkus Associates and has been a regular guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show, offering design advice to viewers. May 25, 2010, was his last day on The Oprah Winfrey Show. His own show, The Nate Berkus Show, debuted in broadcast syndication September 13, 2010. It was co-produced by Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television and was cancelled after its second season ended on May 24, 2012. In December 2004 Berkus and his partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, were vacationing at a beach resort in Sri Lanka when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami hit. While Berkus survived, Bengoechea is missing and presumed dead. Berkus appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on January 17, 2005, to talk about his ordeal and the loss of his love.
After nearly a year of dating, Berkus became engaged to Jeremiah Brent in April 2013. They were married on May 4, 2014 in New York City. In early 2014, the couple was featured in clothier Banana Republic's "True Outfitters" ads in InStyle and Rolling Stone, among other magazines. The New York Times noted they were the first same-sex couple to be featured in ads for the magazines. Berkus announced on March 25, 2015, that the couple's daughter via surrogate, Poppy Brent-Berkus, was born March 23.Berkus was born in Orange County, California, and grew up mainly in suburban Minneapolis. He is Jewish and openly gay. He attended Cushing Academy, a boarding school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. He started working in design immediately after leaving high school and interned at Dominique Aurientis in Paris and Sotheby's in Chicago. Berkus graduated from Lake Forest College near Chicago in 1994 with degrees in French and Sociology. Berkus founded the company, Nate Berkus Associates, in Chicago in 1995.

Designer Nate Berkus spent eight years helping guests on The Oprah Show decorate their homes, but perhaps his most memorable show appearance was in January 2005, when he returned to Oprah's stage just two weeks after surviving an unimaginable tragedy. The natural disaster claimed the lives of more than 400 people, and while Nate survived, Fernando Bengoechea (1965 - December 26, 2004) did not. "I want to keep saying [Fernando's] name out loud because I think it's important for everybody who's lost their life, for their life to be more than that moment of death," Oprah said when Nate opened up about his tragic loss. Fernando Bengoechea was born in Buenos Aires Argentina and grew up in Brazil As an adult he moved to New York City to pursue a career in photography. His work have appeared in a number of magazines such as Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, and Oprah. Other clients of his included House & Garden, Town & Country, K-Mart, J-Crew, New York Times, and American, German and French Vogue. Celebrity clients of his included Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Tommy Hilfiger, Gloria Estefan, Naomi Campbell, Enrique Iglesias, and Ricky Martin.
