Alfred Lynch (January 26, 1931 – December 16, 2003)

Alfred Cornelius Lynch was an actor on stage, film and television. After attending a Roman Catholic school, he worked in a drawing office as a draughtsman before entering national service. Around 1953, whilst working in a factory, he attended theatre acting evening classes, at which he met his life partner, James Culliford, another cockney drama student; they fell in love, and were together for nearly 50 years. Culliford was an actor on stage, film and television. Some of his noted roles are The Entertainer (1960), Quatermass and the Pit (1967) and The Trygon Factor (1969). He also appeared in the Doctor Who serial Frontier in Space in 1973. Jimmy Culliford suffered a stroke in 1972, after which he and Alfie moved from London to Brighton, where, until Jimmy's death in 2002, Alfie largely put aside his career to look after him. It was the central relationship of Alfie's life. He attracted many passionate admirers but, despite little detours and adventures, which included a fling with Rudolf Nureyev, it was to Jimmy that he always returned.

Arthur C. Clarke (December 16, 1917 – March 19, 2008)

Sir Arthur Charles Clarke was a British science fiction author, inventor, and futurist, famous for his short stories and novels, among them 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). On a trip to Florida in 1953, Clarke met and quickly married Marilyn Mayfield, a 22-year-old American divorcee with a young son. They separated permanently after six months, although the divorce was not finalized until 1964. "The marriage was incompatible from the beginning", says Clarke. Clarke never remarried after his sudden marriage and even more sudden divorce, but was close to a Sri Lankan man, Leslie Ekanayake, whom the author called his "only perfect friend of a lifetime" in his dedication to The Fountains of Paradise. Clarke is buried with Ekanayake, who predeceased him by three decades, in the Colombo central cemetery. In his biography of Stanley Kubrick, John Baxter cites Clarke's homosexuality as a reason why he relocated, due to more tolerant laws with regard to homosexuality in Sri Lanka. Journalists who enquired of Clarke whether he was gay were told, "No, merely mildly cheerful." Arthur C. Clarke’s home in Colombo, still untouched today after his death, is named after Leslie, Leslie’s House, and Leslie’s portrait hangs on a wall.

Camille Saint-Saëns (October 9, 1835 – December 16, 1921)

Camille Saint-Saëns composed beautiful music all his life, from his start as a child prodigy at six until his death at age eighty-six. He is best remembered today for his symphonic poems, including Danse Macabre, his opera Samson et Dalila, and his songs, including Variation on a Theme by Beethoven and The Carnival of the Animals. Once, when asked if he were gay, Saint-Saëns replied, famously, "I am not a homosexual but a pederast.“ At the time his comment would have invoked the classic Greek ideal of the pure love between an older man and a young one. One of his lovers was post office director Henri Le Libon (d. 1876), who left Saint-Saëns enough money to be able to devote himself to music.

Denham Fouts (May 9, 1914 – December 16, 1948)

Denham Fouts was an American male prostitute, socialite and literary muse. He served as the inspiration for characters by Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Christopher Isherwood and Gavin Lambert. His friends, who called him Denny, included Christopher Isherwood, Brion Gysin, Glenway Wescott, Truman Capote, George Platt Lynes, Jane Bowles and Paul Bowles, Jean and Cyril Connolly and Michael Wishart. Isherwood described him as a mythic figure, "the most expensive male prostitute in the world" and Capote considered him the "Best-Kept Boy in the World". Fouts was an opium addict, and at one time boyfriend of artist Peter Watson. Fouts spent much of his later life dissolute, spending time "in bed like a corpse, sheet to his chin, a cigarette between his lips turning to ash. His lover Anthony Watson-Gandy, a writer and translator, would remove the cigarette just before it burned his lips." Fouts died in 1948, at the Pensione Foggetti, in Rome, at the age of 35 of a "hypoplastic aorta and hypertrophy of left ventricle". His body was buried in the first zone, 11th row, of the city's Protestant Cemetery. A friend, John Goodwin, told Christopher Isherwood that Fouts was found dead in his bathroom.

Dixie Lee Ruliffson (December 16, 1943 - July 16, 2007)

Brenda J. Grissom (1951-2011) was the owner of The Polish Shop in Belleville. She previously co-owned the Char-Pei Lounge in Belleville and Char-Pei's City Center in E. St. Louis. Brenda was an active member of the St. Louis area LGBT community and a member of Metropolitan Community Church in St. Louis, and T.O.P.S. She was a greeter at Belleville Wal-Mart. She was preceded in death by her life companion, Dixie Lee Ruliffson (1943-2007). They are buried together at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery (Belleville, IL 62221).

Dorothy Caruso (August 6, 1893 – December 16, 1955)

The daughter of well to do patent lawyer Park Benjaminin of New York, Dorothy was 25 when she married Italian tenor Enrico in 1918. The marriage produced one child, daughter Gloria who was born in 1919. The couple had been married just shy of 3 years when Enrico died at the age of 48. Dorothy would marry two more times. Her second husband was Captain Ernest Augustus Ingram, and her third was Dr. Charles Adam Holder. Dorothy wrote two biographies about Enrico. The first entitled Wings of Song-The Story of Caruso was published in 1928. The second and more successful Enrico Caruso-His Life And Death was released 17 years later in 1945 and was the source material for the 1951 film The Great Caruso starring Mario Lanza as Enrico and Ann Blyth as Dorothy. By 1942, the relationship of Margaret Anderson with Jane Heap had cooled, and, evacuating from the war in France, Anderson sailed for the United States. During the voyage, Anderson met Dorothy Caruso. The two began a romantic relationship, and lived together until Caruso's death. In 1952, Dorothy wrote her autobiography. She died of cancer in Baltimore, Maryland, just few days before Christmas 1955.

Elizabeth Carter (December 16, 1717 – February 19, 1806)

Elizabeth Carter was an English poet, classicist, writer and translator, and a member of the Bluestocking Circle. Catherine Talbot was an English author. February 1741 saw the beginning of her lifelong friendship with Elizabeth Carter. The two women carried on a lively and copious correspondence. During the whole period of her residence with Thomas Secker, a protégé of Talbot’s father, Catherine Talbot was Secker's almoner. In 1760, accompanied by Elizabeth Carter, she went to Bristol for her health. Secker died in 1768, leaving to Mrs. Talbot and her daughter £13,000 in the public funds. The women moved from Lambeth Palace to Lower Grosvenor Street. There Catherine died of cancer on 9 January 1770, aged 48. Several poems were written in her praise. At her daughter's death in 1770, Mrs. Talbot put her daughter's manuscripts into Elizabeth Carter's hand, leaving their publication to her discretion.

Frances Witherspoon (July 8, 1886 – December 16, 1973)

Tracy D. Mygatt and Frances Witherspoon were prolific writers and absolute pacifists, who worked together in movements for women's rights, world peace, civil liberties, and civil rights. Both women authored plays, articles, poems, sermons, and stories, individually and in collaboration. They were founders of the War Resisters League and later served as honorary chairs. Frances Witherspoon was a co-founder and Executive Secretary of the New York Bureau of Legal Advice. Tracy Mygatt was very active with the Campaign for World Government from 1941 to 1973. Both graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1908, then lived and worked together for more than 60 years in the cause of world peace. Soon after graduation, they became involved in the struggle for women's suffrage and served as the first organizers of the Women's Suffrage Party in eastern Pennsylvania. In 1913, they moved to New York City where they joined the Socialist Party. Both were engaged in providing food and shelter in churches for the unemployed (called "church raids"). Tracy Mygatt, increasingly helpless and nearly blind, died on November 22, 1973, at the age of 88. Frances Witherspoon, gravely ill at the time, died shortly after on December 16, 1973, at the age of 87.

George Santayana (December 16, 1863 - September 26, 1952)

Remembered now chiefly as an American philosopher from the age of William James and Josiah Royce, George Santayana was a poet, novelist, and literary critic, as well as a speculative thinker. Although late in fully understanding his sexual preference, he wrote a series of sonnets celebrating his love for a friend who died young and described his male friendships in rhapsodic terms in his autobiography. Santayana's place in the gay literary tradition derives perhaps less directly from his writings (though the subtle homoeroticism of The Last Puritan is a significant contribution) than from the impact of antigay bigotry on his professional life at Harvard. Although regarded as brilliant by his peers (including William James), Santayana's status as a bachelor met with the university administration's clear disapproval. By his own account, Santayana did not really understand his own sexual preference until fairly late in life. During a 1929 conversation about A. E. Housman, a favorite poet, Santayana told his secretary Daniel Cory that Housman "was really what people nowadays call 'homosexual'; the sentiment of his poems is unmistakable." Santayana then added: "I think I must have been that way in my Harvard days, though I was unconscious of it at the time." One finds Santayana's clearest homophile expression in a set of four elegiac sonnets for Warwick Potter, a young man Santayana called his "last real friend," who died of cholera following a boating accident in 1893. The sequence, "To W.P." (1894) inevitably recalls Milton's "Lycidas," though Santayana's poem is much less an exercise in literary and mythological allusion than Milton's.

Margaret Mead (December 16, 1901 – November 15, 1978)

Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict are considered to be the two most influential and famous women anthropologists of their time. As a student at Barnard College, Mead fell in love with her instructor, Benedict. From their meeting at Columbia University in the early 1920s until Benedict's death in 1948, they remained close, despite the interruption of marriage, affairs, fieldwork, and jealous colleagues. They were known to review each other’s work frequently; they created a companionship that began through their work, but which also, during the early period, was of an erotic character. They both wanted to dislodge stereotypes about women during their time and show that working women can be successful even though working society was seen as a man’s world. After Benedict died of a heart attack in 1948, Mead kept the legacy of Benedict’s work going by supervising projects that Benedict would have looked after, and editing and publishing notes from studies that Benedict had collected throughout her life, including examples of Benedict’s poetry, without revealing that some of the love poems had been written for and about Mead herself. Mead had a close romantic and professional relationship for over thirty years with eminent anthropologist Rhoda Metraux. Metraux was a prominent anthropologist in the area of cross-cultural studies, specializing in Haitian voodoo and the Iatmul of New Guinea. They shared a house in Greenwich Village from 1955 to 1966 and an apartment on Central Park West from 1966 to 1978. They co-wrote important books together and had big influence on 20th century anthropology. Mead provided Metraux with a trust fund.

Noël Coward (December 16, 1899 – March 26, 1973)

Sir Noël Coward was an English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called "a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise". Coward's most important relationship, which began in the mid-1940s and lasted until his death, was with South African-born English actor and singer Graham Payn. Coward did not publicly acknowledge his homosexuality, but it was discussed candidly after his death by biographers, including Payn, and in Coward's diaries and letters, published posthumously. On 28 March 1984, the Queen Mother unveiled a memorial stone in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. Thanked by Payn, for attending, the Queen Mother replied, "I came because he was my friend.” Coward had a 19-year friendship with Prince George, Duke of Kent. Coward reportedly admitted to the historian Michael Thornton that there had been "a little dalliance". Coward said, on the duke's death, "I suddenly find that I loved him more than I knew."

Ralph Adams Cram (December 16, 1863 – September 22, 1942)

Ralph Adams Cram, FAIA (December 16, 1863 – September 22, 1942) was a prolific and influential American architect of collegiate and ecclesiastical buildings, often in the Gothic style. Cram & Ferguson and Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson are partnerships in which he worked. Together with an architect and artist, he is honored on December 16 as a feast day in the Episcopal Church of the United States. Cram was part of a circle of gay men and lesbians, the Boston Bohemians, at the turn of the century. In 1900 Cram married Elizabeth Carrington Read at New Bedford, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Clement Carrington Read and his wife. Read had served as a captain in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Elizabeth and Ralph had three children, Mary Carrington Cram, Ralph Wentworth Cram and Elizabeth Strudwick Cram. The family burial site is at the St. Elizabeth's Memorial Churchyard. Sylvester (September 6, 1947 – December 16, 1988)

Sylvester James (Los Angeles, September 6, 1947 – San Francisco, December 16, 1988), better known as Sylvester, was an American disco and soul singer-songwriter. Known for his flamboyant and androgynous appearance, he was often described as a drag queen, although repeatedly rejected such a description. Responsible for a string of hit singles, in the late 1970s, Sylvester became known in the United States under the moniker of the "Queen of Disco". Sylvester was openly gay, with biographer Joshua Gamson noting that he tended to enter into relationships with men who were "white, self-doubting and effeminate." In 1978, he met a model named John Maley at a San Francisco show, and the slim, white Catholic boy soon moved in to live with Sylvester at his apartment. Sylvester later devoted the song "Can't Forget the Love" from his Too Hot to Sleep album to his young lover, but their relationship broke up when Maley decided to move to Los Angeles; he would later recollect that Sylvester "was a lovely man, and I owe him a lot." In 1981, Sylvester entered into a relationship with a skinny brunette from Deep River, Connecticut named Michael Rayner, but unlike his predecessors he did not move into Sylvester's house; their partnership ended as soon as Rayner admitted that he hadn't fallen completely in love with Sylvester. Sylvester's next major relationship was with Tom Daniels, a hairdresser whom he met in 1982, but their romance ended after six months when Daniels discovered that Sylvester had been having sex with other men whilst on tour. His final partner, Rick Cranmer, was a six foot two blonde with blue eyes, whom he had first met at one of his gigs in 1984. An architect, he and Sylvester would eventually move into a house together in the hills. Cranmer would die of AIDS in 1987, the year before Sylvester also succumbed to the virus.

Thomas Schippers (March 9, 1930 – December 16, 1977)

Thomas Schippers was an American conductor. He was highly regarded for his work in opera. Regrettably, soon after building the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's international reputation and recording with them, he died of lung cancer at the early age of 47. It was around 1949 that Thomas Schippers met the composer Gian Carlo Menotti while accompanying a singer for an audition. This eventually led to a long-term collaboration with Menotti. Following the 1950 premiere of Menotti's opera The Consul, Schippers began conducting it on Broadway and in 1951 directed the milestone premiere television performance of Menotti's Christmas Opera Amahl and the Night Visitors broadcast live on national television on Dec. 24. According to the professor, writer, and opera scholar John Louis DiGaetani, Schippers had a lengthy romantic relationship with Menotti, in addition to a shorter romantic relationship with mathematician Sean Clarke. A biography of Leonard Bernstein states that Schippers and Bernstein also were intimately involved.

W. Somerset Maugham (January 25, 1874 – December 16, 1965)

William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. In 1914, W. Somerset Maugham met Gerald Haxton, a young American who would be his companion until his death in 1944. Maugham married Syrie Wellcome, the former wife of Henry Wellcome. The marriage was unhappy, and Syrie divorced him in 1929, finding his relationship and travels with Haxton too difficult to live with. Maugham regarded Haxton as indispensable to his success as a writer. Maugham was painfully shy, and Haxton the extrovert gathered human material, which the author converted to fiction. Maugham placed a dedication in his 1949 compilation, A Writer’s Notebook: “In Loving Memory of My Friend Frederick Gerald Haxton, 1892 -1944.” After Haxton died in 1944, Maugham began a relationship with Alan Searle. Older men had already kept Searle, a young man from the London slum area of Bermondsey. He proved a devoted if not a stimulating companion. One of Maugham's friends, describing the difference between Haxton and Searle, said, "Gerald was vintage, Alan was vin ordinaire.”
