Mojave Desert, 1965. A migrant laborer hops trains, 'goes where the work is,' But what really keeps him running is his own haunted past. At the most likely Outpost, a roadside diner in the middle of nowhere, a younger man becomes the opportunity to face his past, put his demons to rest, and finally, stop running.
Outpost tells the story of the doomed love affair between two 17 year old Midwestern farm hands in the early 1940’s. Though laced with nostalgia, the film paints a darker portrait of classic Americana, exposing the provincial attitudes, intolerance and domestic violence that lie just beneath the surface. These forces ultimately destroy the pair, and Farren meets a mysterious death. Jake, having failed at rescuing Farren from his own demons, is left guilt-ridden and longing for the past. For twenty years he hops trains as a migrant laborer, never settling down, until a chance encounter brings him face-to-face with his own emotional destitution. David, the young man vying for his affection, offers, “Sometimes if we tell our story, even to one person, we are freed…” In doing so, Jake realizes it is himself he must rescue, and that “standing still” will be his greatest adventure. Ultimately life-affirming, Outpost illustrates to us that it’s never too late to face our demons, let go of the past, and engage in life with an open heart.
