The ramblings part of the journal

I really should let not the spur of the moment drives me, but it's the second time that I slept very bad since I had a not nice conversation soon before going sleep. Since I was careless enough to start this thing online, even if then continued in private, if there are people who witnessed to that, please don't make name, I really am not writing this to bring damage to another person, but only since, if I take it inside, it will burst later in a bigger way.

More or less 2 months ago I received a nice review request, and a lot of you know that I really appreciate those. It was from a new author and new publisher, so I was even more glad. Have you notice that I give priority to new authors and publishers? It would easy enough to raise comments on famous authors, but I really think that even the newest author deserves a first chance. I'm not sure but I think that I'm quite alone in doing so, and I believe so since many authors wrote to me telling that I was their "first". And most of the time I already bought the book when they ask a review, it happened only yesterday with two requests, I already had the book.

Anyway when that request arrived I was pretty clear with that author, I said that I didn't buy the book by myself since I believed it was a menages with a woman on the side, and you all know that I don't really like them. The author assured me that it was not and so I accepted the book. I even read it as soon as possible, to give the author as much more visibility near the release date as possible. I started the post giving a warning to the content of the book, specifying that it was not a menages, and received comments, even from the author, saying that many people didn't understand it and was grateful for the warning.

Then nothing for a month; after a month another review site reviewed the same book, starting the post in the same way as me, warning the readers on the content of the book; at that point the author (or the publisher) realized that they were losing readers and took the right measures. All right, two voices are better than one, but now the author is thanking that second review site saying that all started on it. I gently made notice that it was not exactly like that and the author in different comments replied to me that:

1) maybe my review had not so much space or visibility... yes right, that month my LJ had 13.300 single visits when the average for a review site is 3.000/4.000 (those are the standard to be considered "review site"), and the review remained in the front page for a week, I always try to not let them shift on second page for a reason, you know?

2) maybe people didn't read the review since I'm not enough M/M focused (on the contrary of the other review site) and so people didn't understand that it was not a polyamour book... yes, right, if I was more M/M focused I would be a man! I reviewed 1057 books at yesterday and only 20 are M/F and only 73 are menages, and among the menages only 9 with a woman, so 29 books with a woman in 1057 means a 2% of all my reviews.

3) maybe on the other review site the post received more response from people... yes, right, my review received 22 comments from 6 different people, 4 of them not involved directly with me or the author, on the other site it received 16 comments all from reviewers of that site other than 1. 22 comments... yesterday the post in which I featured Allan Hollinghurst, winner of a booker prize, received 17 comments...

So am I taking all this wrong? Should I stick with Man Candy Posts, Gay Romance Movies, and reviews of books that will be read anyway? Should I write reviews in which I say that every book is terrific? Should I ignore a review request from an unknown author and publisher till some other review site spend its time to "taste" it in advance? I know that the answers to all these questions is NO, but authors please, when you send me a book to review could at least take a look at my LJ? NOT ENOUGH M/M FOCUSED?!?!

Yes I read something like that, and since I have no control on it, I let it pass. I post my reviews, I update my lists and if this allow me to be a Top Reviewer, I'm good, if not, I'm good nevertheless. Elisa

[identity profile] kennsea.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not m/m focused? I don't think they even looked!

First and foremost, you write for yourself and what you want to write about. Don't let anybody else dictate that!

And don't let the bastards keep you down!

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
They were so clueless with their answers that I really think they never look at my LJ after I posted that review. So yes, I should not care of what they say. Elisa

Oh, my. I think I know what book you mean and all I can say is, sigh.

They are nuts right? Not M/M focused????!!! Sorry, Elisa. People on the internet are sometimes very strange. I love your live journal the way it is and look forward to it every day.

Elisa, I'm sorry such careless words have made you feel bad. Your site is awesome and I love to read your reviews. Don't change a thing.

I hope you get over your migraine soon *hugs*

[identity profile] chrissymunder.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Just adding my disbelief to the mix. I know as a new author a lot of mistakes can be made through ignorance. This one is saddening.

Don't change a thing, please. I look to your posts to see what's new and exciting in m/m.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Shawn, I can only think they were thrilled that the publisher did something to limit the damage, and in the excitement something "slips". But for how I am, after the first slip, I would have stopped, and instead they continue to comment worsening the thing. Maybe they were clueless, or maybe I should have not replied from the first moment. Elisa

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's almost better, but I really can't wait to be home. Thank you for the kind words. Elisa

Elisa,

I for one have made your LJ a regular stop because I know I will find information about new m/m releases and authors here. Heck, when I started reading the genre, I used your archived reviews to find books that might interest me and discovered many authors that are now auto-buy for me.

If you ask me, you deserve royalty payments for all the m/m books that I alone bought because you introduced them here on your LJ.

Obviously this author/publisher does not have the best of grasp of his/her job and target audience – first placing a woman on the cover of an m/m and second not knowing enough about the online m/m community to know that your LJ is like an online reference site for many, many people interested in the genre.

Chrissie

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Chrissy. I really think they weren't aware of what they were saying, they always tried to patch things, adding only more sad to the whole (the not enough M/M focused comment...). Elisa

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Chrissie, it is comment like your that makes worth all the work I did. I really tried to build this LJ as an easiest way to discover the M/M romance world, and it's for this reason that comments like the one from that author are even more hurtful. But thank you to let me know that for some of you the purpose is reached. Elisa

[identity profile] eroticjames.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, tactless and pointless of them. In two fell swoops and one book this author just hit "Diva" in my playbook. I'm sorry you had to experiance that. The hubris of some new authors is only sometimes outshown by how clueless they are to boot.

I cherish each of your reviews. I don't read other review site...I read yours, and you have, from before you started this LJ been a supporter of the genre. Sorry you had to go through that love.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. You are among the first the friend me back on this LJ, so I know you see it grow and change with time. I really try to make it a nice place, it's my "baby", and it makes me mad when someone put it down without reason. If I read the first reviews I made two years ago, I really am surprised that I'm still here, they are so naive and "unhelpful". But I believe to have grown with the LJ myself, or at least I hope. Elisa

I think you can tell from the outpouring of support and respect how much this comment was in error. There is no doubt you are a leading reviewer and lover of all things M/M so to even pretend otherwise is ignorance on the part of that person. They sadly lack the class and knowledge that you convey so effortlessly.

It's incredibly unfortunate they spoke without having a clue about the HUGE impact you have on authors, publishers and readers. Your reviews are some of the most quoted and used that I've seen. Please do not let this stop you or even let you doubt your impact and contribution.

[identity profile] nichem.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Elisa, I love your LJ. I have it bookmarked in my favorites and check it every day for new m/m recommendations. I agree with Chrissie-- you should get royalties from all the m/m books I've bought after reading about them on your site. So don't change a thing, please.

Hope you're feeling better.

[identity profile] sydmcginley.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw Elisa, I send you a big virtual hug and some tea to sip.
You are a beacon of m/m.
Love
Syd

Don't let this one person get you down, Elisa. I love your blog just as it is, and judging by the comments, a ton of other people do as well. It would so sad if you changed because of one bad apple.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Kassa, I know that I haven't to be touched by things like that. And I know since everytime I doubt myself, you all are always ready to make me feel better. Elisa

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you nichem, all your comments are even better than the royalties ;-) Elisa

[identity profile] angelabenedetti.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good grief.

my review had not so much space or visibility ... I'm not enough M/M focused ... on the other review site the post received more response from people... yes, right, my review received 22 comments from 6 different people, 4 of them not involved directly with me or the author, on the other site it received 16 comments all from reviewers of that site other than 1

I'm sorry, this person is an idiot. The only productive way to deal with this sort of garbage is to consider the source and ignore them. There's no reason to stress yourself out over what idiots think. There you go -- discard and move on.

Angie

I should really take that tea, maybe I will after leaving this comment. Thank you Syd, you are for example among the authors I no more consider a newbies, and maybe you are suffering of this, but I have your books and I will try to read it as soon as possible. Elisa

[identity profile] kitzheng.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I agree! You're definitely m/m focused, and that author must not have been paying attention if s/he thought you weren't.

I don't think you should let one bad apple put you off doing what you enjoy. I for one think it's wonderful and admirable, what you do, and that you review books from authors new and old, and publishers new and old :)

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Amanda, and yes, I don't think I will change nothing due to this event, they are not part of the events that make me wonder strong enough. Elisa

[identity profile] darkmarguerite.livejournal.com 2009-03-26 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Elisa,

I'm so very sorry you went through this. I love your site and everything it has to offer above and beyond the reviews.

You've amazed me in the past over how clearly you see the stories, and have even given me insights into my own characters that I've missed. Your criticisms are gently given.

If this lady doesn't feel your site is worth her time, it's her loss. It's a wonderful outreach opportunity. Thank you for everything you have done.

Marguerite

Oh, my gosh, doesn't it just want to make you HURL? I feel so grateful to get a mention from you, and I just rec'd your site as the 'single best place to go for an m/m reviewer who will:
1. let you know enough about a book to decide whether you will like it without spoilers. and
2. review books you've never even heard of anywhere else.

You reviewed Crossing Borders what? Two days or so after it came out, and it was the thrill of a lifetime. It also put me at ease at a time when I was a nervous wreck.

But even more important, I think, is the fact that as a reader fully 75% of the books I buy are directly from the links on your site. Films too. I have that amazon one click two day free ship, and I just go directly from your site three-fourths of the time, and purchase a book that way. That has to count for something. Books I would never even LOOK at have been some of the best choices, and I wouldn't have heard of either the book or the publisher or tracked it down without your site.

Thank you again for everything. Don't change a thing, sweetie!
