Ismail Merchant (25 December 1936 – 25 May 2005) was an Indian-born film producer and director, best known for the results of his famously long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions which included director (and Merchant's longtime professional and personal partner) James Ivory as well as screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Their films won six Academy Awards. Ismail Merchant and James Ivory were widely recognized, during the final decades of the 20th century, as setting the gold standard when it came to adapting iconic novels into high-quality motion pictures. Among their best-known works are A Room with a View and Howards End. In 1961, Merchant and Ivory formed the film production company MIP. Merchant was also Ivory's long-term life partner. Their professional and romantic partnership lasted from the early 1960s until Merchant's death in 2005.
