Lance Mulcahy & Desmond Heeley

Lance Mulcahy (April 17, 1931, Sydney, Australia - January 26, 1995, New York, New York) was a Broadway and Musical Theatre composer and a Composer-in-Residence with Center Stage Theater of Baltimore. His archives are with Desmond Heeley, his companion, and they are pledged to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. (P: Desmond Heeley)

Among his musicals, Keystone was inspired by silent film and provided an inspiration for Jerry Herman's contemporaneous and more successful Mack & Mabel.

His musical Shakespeare's Cabaret, one of three works based on the Bard, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1981.

Desmond Heeley has designed settings and costumes for famous companies and institutions worldwide. His legendary work has been lauded at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, England's National Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera, the American Ballet Theatre, the Vienna State Opera, Canada's Stratford Shakespeare Festival Theater and La Scala, Milan, designing for such renowned names as Lord Laurence Olivier, playwright Tom Stoppard, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Vivien Leigh, Kiri Te Kanawa, Margot Fonteyn, Beverly Sills and Gian Carlo Menotti. For Tiffany & Co., Desmond Heeley has designed Christmas tableaux and a series of memorable windows starring great queens and empresses throughout history. He was professor of design at the Tisch School for the Arts at NYU and has taught and lectured on stage and costume design at universities in the United States, Canada and England. He is the inaugural recipient of the Theatre Development Fund's prestigious Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award. Desmond Heeley's acclaimed association with Brian Bedford at Canada's Stratford Shakespeare Festival Theatre includes productions of Titus Andronicus, Amadeus and the comedy London Assurance. He won the 2011 Tony Awards for Costume Design of The Importance of Being Earnest.
