Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (April 25, 1694 – December 15, 1753)
In 1711 George Frederick Handel’s opera “Rinaldo” was a hit, and the next year he moved in with Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. The eighteen-year-old Burlington held court at Burlington House in Piccadilly and at his country estate, Chiswick House. Here over the years he gathered a coterie of artists including the poets Pope and Gay and the architect William Kent, also fresh from Rome and eager to spread Palladio over the English countryside. The atmosphere of this “verdant and artistic hothouse,” Ellen Harris reports in her wonderful book on Handel’s cantatas, breathed a “luxurious and indolent sensuality” and a “distinct homoerotic undertone.”
