Not books related: do not disturb the sleeping dog

I don't usually post about me, even if this is actually "my" LiveJournal, but sometime I feel to share what happens in my personal life. Many of my friends, basically since I post pictures about my travels, know that I work in the financial software industry and that I need to travel for work, also abroad. I shouldn't say it by myself, but since a lot of my clients are happy with my work, I'm probably good at what I do. And being happy with what I do for me is more important, really, of how much I gain. Plus, if I'm comfortable when I travel, it's not so important for me of the physical place where I stay when I'm in office. So, even if I have a good seniority in comparison to other people in my firm, my desktop is in an open space; it's not bad since it's in an corner, and so I have all the quiet I need.

Lately I worked a lot abroad, and so I'm not often in the office, and they are hiring new people, and someone from another department asked me if they can use my desktop. I told them that I would check with my department if they had another place for me and so I did. Plus in this period I had to discuss my appraisal with my boss, and so I thought to kill two birds with a stone. The day of the planned appointment for the appraisal my boss at last minute told me that he had an urgency and basically he only told me that the only place they had free was on some "temporary" stations where usually they sort people just arrived in the firm... I saw red! All right, I don't really need an office or a big desktop, but offering me a place practically in the corridor?

I sent to the boss of my boss an angry email pretending to plan a meeting to discuss my appraisal, and I close the letter saying that I was considering to place myself on the market. Then at home, I browsed the job search engine and found a profile that was quite similar to mine. I sent the resume more or less at 11.00 p.m. sincerely not expecting a reply since it was a job not in my city.

The next morning I was powering on my laptop, 9.00 a.m. more or less, when my mobile rang: it was the headhunter and he was really in an hurry to have the all right from me to send my resume to the firm to plan a meeting. I said all right and he said he would let me know in a week or so. Then I went back to my laptop and what I found in my inbox? An email from the boss of my boss telling me that I was assigned an office and a rise of salary. And today? just one day later? the headhunter called to plan the meeting in a week and he also told me that the distance from work is not an issue since when I haven't to be on client site, I will work from home.

So now from not having an office, I have even the chance to work from home. I decided to go to the meeting and see what they are offering and then I will take my decision. Moral of the story: do not disturb the sleeping dog, since if they didn't behave so wrongly with me, I was happy with what I had ;-)

Sounds like things will improve no matter what you decide--congratulations!

Good news for you. Now you can pick which job is better for you. Good luck and congratulations!

Wow, good for you! Hope the best!

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was almost laughing when all changed in a night. Sometime I don't realize what I can obtain only asking.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I will do exactly that, I will ponder both option and then decide.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I really didn't expect it was so easy to find an option.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] ryan-field.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Elisa, this was such a funny post to read. And so close to me right now since I'm going through something similar. I'm worried about disturbing that sleeping dog, too. I just don't want to get bitten in the wrong place when and if the dog moves :)

Good luck on your decision, and keep us posted.

[identity profile] yachay.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's wonderful! And definitely a proof that you are really good at what you do. :)

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case I'm in a strong position, since I'm the only one with my seniority in the firm and they fear to loose my know-how. But not always you can have the knife from the hand.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I'm really low-profile and since I like what I do, I not always make my firm aware of what I really do for them. But I think that, with the prospective of loosing me, they needed to consider that.

[identity profile] aileenfan.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh LOL!!! I wish you luck, seems that no matter what you decide your situation will improve:)

BTW, I'm impressed by your time managing - you work, you travel, you organise the awards and, on top of that all, you read a lot and write here:) I'm speechless, really:) Do you ever sleep???

Hugs,
Caroline

You will notice that I started to read a bit less than usually, and this is exactly since I'm travelling a lot for work, and basically I do a lot of overtime when I'm on client site. I always say that I don't watch TV, so basically, if they let me go home at a decent hour, I can read a book per night, or at least a novella. And I'm not married, really if I will not stumble upon a man, I have no time to go out and search ;-)))

[identity profile] girlofavalon.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like it is good news for you, whatever your decision is :D

[identity profile] vashtan.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well done and good luck! I've been in a very similar situation, so I'm currently interviewing. If the place burns down behind me, my eyes will remain dry.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to good to be true

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, well, after proposing me the aisle as station, well, probably I will not shed tears for them neither.

[identity profile] chris-quinton.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! You certainly stirred up the luck! *g* what a marvelous opportunity - I'm wishing you all the best fortune in whatever decision you make!

And isn't it nice to know they really value you?

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I'm really happy and I hope it's not only a temporary luck :-)

Great story, Elisa! I was LOLing very hard toward the end.

Anyhoo, good luck with your final decision. :)

[identity profile] treva2007.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! This sounds like a wonderful choice for you no matter what you do.

[identity profile] jan-irving.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Elisa, something like this happened to me and I did what you did. It ended up this wonderful thing.

I am glad you have turned this around to be something beneficial to you.

[identity profile] rbm00.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa! Congratulations. It looks like there's no wrong choice. Hope you're happy wherever you decide to be.

[identity profile] angelabenedetti.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Go Elisa! :D Whichever option you end up choosing, sounds like things will be pretty good. I hope your boss gets a good chewing-out; he clearly cost the company a lot of money, however it goes, with his carelessness.

Angie

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, it was really almost a funny situation, but in a good way.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, Treva, it is that chance in life that not always happens but when it does, it is all good.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know that there are chances for me to have an happily ever after ;-)

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think I will be. There is for sure the excitement of something new and of course the comfort to work from home. I need to balance all side and then take my decision.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I have an expertize that it's really hard to find, and if I will decide to go, they don't have anyone in this moment to replace me. In a way, I would feel guilty to do that to them, I'm really faithful.

[identity profile] clarelondon.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! Exciting news. I think it's important sometimes to re-aquaint yourself with the market out there, and to reassure yourself you'll be valued there as well. And the working from home would be excellent. I'm still trying to pluck up courage whether to ask for a 4-day week rather than full-time, let alone working out of the office :).

Good luck with it all!
*hugs*

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I hope to obtain it, I already work 40/60 minutes by car from office, so 2 hours per day of my time is spent in car. It would be wonderful to gain that time for me.

[identity profile] jordan-c-price.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's so exciting to think you could get rid of that commute! That would probably be the deal breaker for me.

At my day job I asked them to consolidate my hours so I didn't have to come in a few hours here, a few hours there, which amounted to 4-5 workdays but only 20 hours pay. They said no. So I quit.

Now they have someone who's not nearly as efficient working for them...and I get to stay home and be an author.

Maybe it's a good thing they offered you a desk in the hallway. Maybe it's the catalyst for making a positive change!

[identity profile] annabirmingham.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you. It's often not until an employee looks elsewhere that the boss realises how good they are! x

[identity profile] cicirossi.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yay for a raise!

Thank you so much for the milk and cookies :D

[identity profile] yachay.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, elisa! You really do spoil me rotten :)

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, probably in the end it will be better for me, or at least I hope so ;-) If it wasn't a very stressful period probably I would have shrug my shoulders to the hallway proposal and moved, but I really gave the blood for them in these last months and it felt like they didn't realize at all.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And so they loose all the good people :-) Not that I'm good, but usually it happens like that.

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
comfort food is always good ;-)

[identity profile] peachette48.livejournal.com 2010-05-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you!
All the cards are in your hand. Play them well. And thank you for the present....

[identity profile] elisa-rolle.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
