Behind the Cover: Jeff Cottenden

Jeff Cottenden is a photographer specialized in historical cover art; no really info on him on the internet, but there is a wonderful website and archive with all the available photos.

Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous!

How did you manage to save the 1st image? I tried with the blond tudor chap but alas, no success.

When I click on the image it open a pop up and from there "save us" and that's all... maybe it depends on my browser? I have IE8

Oh, those are beautiful! I've noticed a few of these book covers before and thought they were stunning. Thanks for posting them all together like this.

Oh, those are lovely! I think I like them better before they become book covers though. It seems a shame to put text on them.

Amazing photographer. I've been right through his website drooling over the textures and lighting. Just wonderful. Thanks for posting about him.

We need more photographers doing period pictures. And the quality is so high that is amazing.

Elisa, what a great series. I hope you'll be doing more interviews with other cover artists. These covers are literally breathtaking. And it's fascinating to know how the pros who work for the big publishers go about their work. I would love to know how much a cover with model, costumes, photo shoot, etc. costs. I bet it costs more than a loaf of bread! These are real artists.

I like to let people understand how much work there is behind a beautiful cover. I think that, at that level, they have to be quite expensive. An artist told me that a single cover, with quite details, costs 500 euro, and he was a cheaper one.
