Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (January 5, 1767 – December 9, 1824)

Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) was a French painter and pupil of Jacques-Louis David, who was part of the beginning of the Romantic movement by adding elements of eroticism through his paintings. According to the scholar Diana Knight, over the years Girodet’s homosexuality became widely known.

Berenice Abbott (July 17, 1898 - December 9, 1991)

Berenice Abbott was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photography of New York City architecture and urban design of the 1930s. In 1935, Abbott moved into a Greenwich Village loft with the art critic Elizabeth McCausland, with whom she lived until McCausland's death in 1965. McCausland was an ardent supporter of Abbott, writing several articles for the Springfield Daily Republican, as well as for Trend and New Masses (the latter under the pseudonym Elizabeth Noble). In addition, McCausland contributed the captions for the book of Abbott's photographs entitled Changing New York, which was published in 1939. In the ‘50s, Abbott and McCausland traveled US 1 from Florida to Maine, and Abbott photographed the small towns and growing automobile-related architecture. Shortly after, Abbott underwent a lung operation. She was told she should move from New York City due to air pollution and she bought a rundown home in Blanchard, Maine along the banks of the Piscataquis River. Later she moved to nearby Monson, remaining in Maine until her death in 1991.

Edith Craig (December 9, 1869 – March 27, 1947)

Edith Craig was a prolific theatre director, producer, costume designer and early pioneer of the women's suffrage movement in England. She was the daughter of Victorian era actress Ellen Terry and the progressive English architect-designer Edward William Godwin. Her marriage to Martin Shaw in 1903 was prevented by Ellen Terry, out of jealousy for her daughter's affection, and by Christabel Marshall, with whom she lived from 1899 until they were joined in 1916 by the artist Clare Atwood, living in a ménage à trois until Craig's death in 1947. Her family looked down her lesbian lifestyle. Her brother Edward said Edith's sexuality was a result of her "hatred of men, initiated by the hatred of her father". Craig became involved in several books about her mother and George Bernard Shaw, which created a rift with her brother, who asked Craig not to write about their mother. In 1932, Craig adopted Ruby Chelta Craig. Craig was reconciled with her brother some time before her death.

Edith Sitwell (September 7, 1887 - December 9, 1964)

Dame Edith Sitwell was a British poet and critic and the eldest of the three literary Sitwells. Sitwell's closest emotional bond was with another woman, Helen Rootham. In 1903, Rootham, an aspiring poet who translated the works of Arthur Rimbaud into English, was engaged as her governess. In 1913, the two women left the Sitwell family home and set up lodgings in a small, shabby flat in Pembridge Mansions, Bayswater. In 1927, she allegedly fell in love with homosexual Russian painter Pavel Tchelitchew. The relationship lasted until 1928, the same year that Rootham underwent operations for cancer. Edith moved to Paris in 1932 with the terminally ill Rootham, to live with Rootham’s younger sister, Evelyn Wiel, and she remained there until her companion's death in 1938. During the Second World War, Sitwell returned from France and retired to Renishaw with her brother Sir Osbert Sitwell and his lover David Horner. In August 1955, she converted to Roman Catholicism and asked author Evelyn Waugh to serve as her godfather. Tchelitchew died in July 1957. Her brother Osbert died in 1969, of Parkinson's disease, diagnosed in 1950.

Helen Arthur (March 29, 1879 – December 9, 1939)

Helen Arthur was a theatre manager, known for managing the Neighborhood Playhouse for thirteen seasons. Arthur was the manager of several notable actors, including Ruth Draper. She was the first woman to try a criminal case in New York State. Helen Arthur's legal work brought her into contact with Lillian Wald of the Henry Street Settlement. Arthur was in residence at the Settlement during 1906, and was one of two people known to have had romantic relationships with Wald. Arthur was responsible for introducing Agnes Morgan (by that time her partner) to Lewisohn, who went on to become one of the Playhouse's most significant directors. In her memoir of the Playhouse, Lewisohn (now Crowley) described Arthur as "lithe, shirt-waisted, and stiff-colored Helen Arthur, dapper, bright-eyed, keen; and her friend the quiet, serious, watchful Agnes Morgan." Of the relationship between Arthur and Agnes Morgan, another Playhouse performer said they "were a lesbian couple; just everyone knew."

Jack Bee Garland (December 9, 1869 - September 19, 1936)

Jack Bee Garland (1869–1936) was a trans man, author, nurse and adventurer. Garland was also known as Elvira Virginia Mugarrieta, Babe Bean, Jack Beam, Jack Maines, and Beebe Beam. Born at 806 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133, to a father who was a military officer serving as Mexican consul to San Francisco, in 1897, he took residence in Stockton, California. Using the male name Babe Bean and pretending to be mute, he got a job with The Stockton Evening Mail writing stories that focused on social problems such as gambling and vagrancy. On October 5, 1899, he adopted the male identity of Beebe Beam and accompanied United States Army forces to the Philippines in 1899 to participate in the Philippine War for a year, writing, "I saw war and I lived it." On October 21, 1900, Beam published "My Life as a Soldier," in the San Francisco Examiner Magazine. Although Beam never enlisted and did not participate in combat, Beam marketed the story as a woman soldier in the Philippines. Shortly after publishing the Philippine adventure, Beam abandoned newspaper writing and assumed the identity Jack Bee Garland, living as a man for the remainder of his life. As Jack Garland, he devoted himself to social work with the American Red Cross and other charitable organizations. In 1990, transman Lou Sullivan wrote a biography of Bean in which he speculated that he was a fellow transman with a sexual affinity for gay men.

Lucius Beebe (December 9, 1902 - February 4, 1966)

Lucius Morris Beebe was an American author, gourmand, photographer, railroad historian, journalist, and syndicated columnist. Charles Clegg was an American author, photographer, and railroad historian. Clegg is primarily remembered as the lifelong companion of Beebe, and was a co-author of many of Beebe's best-known books. They met in 1940, while both were houseguests at the Washington, D.C. home of Evalyn Walsh McLean. The two soon developed a personal and professional relationship that continued for the rest of Beebe's life. By the standards of the era, the homosexual relationship Beebe and Clegg shared was relatively open and well known. Previously, Beebe had been involved with society photographer Jerome Zerbe. In 1950, they moved to Virginia City, Nevada, where they purchased and restored the Piper family home and later purchased the dormant Territorial Enterprise newspaper. Beebe died in 1966 at the age of 63 of a sudden heart attack. Clegg committed suicide in 1979, on the day that he reached the precise age at which Beebe had died.

Nelly Erichsen (December 9, 1862 – November 15, 1918)

Rose Cleveland was the sister of Pres. Grover Cleveland, who was unmarried during his first two years in office. Rose lived with him in the White House at that time and took over the hostess duties of the First Lady. She later became the principal of the Collegiate Institute of Lafayette, Indiana, a writer and lecturer, and the editor of the Chicago-based magazine Literary Life. At age 44, she started a passionate correspondence with a wealthy widow, Evangeline Simpson, with explicitly erotic correspondence. Things cooled off when 36 yo Evangeline married an Episcopal bishop from Minnesota, Henry Benjamin Whipple, 74 yo. By 1910, after his death, the two women rekindled their relationship and eventually moved to Bagni di Lucca, Italy, to live together. They shared the house with the English illustrator and artist Nelly Erichsen. Rose died at home during the 1918 flu pandemic, within one week of Nelly. They were buried in the English Cemetery at Bagni di Lucca. Before Evangeline’s death in 1930, she directed her executors to bury her next to Rose. “Ah, how I love you, it paralyzes me—it makes me heavy with emotion…. I tremble at the thought of you—all my whole being leans out to you…. Ron Vawter (December 9, 1948 – April 16, 1994)

Ron Vawter was an avant-garde actor who was a pillar of the Wooster Group, an experimental theater collective in SoHo. A versatile performer, Vawter won praise from critics for his acting in Roy Cohn/Jack Smith, his 1992 one-man show Off Broadway. Since the mid-1980's, he was also seen in small parts in mainstream vehicles including the films Philadelphia, Sex, Lies and Videotape and The Silence of the Lambs. In the first half of Roy Cohn/Jack Smith, which was directed by Greg Mehrten, his companion, Vawter wore a purple smoking jacket and gave an eerie impersonation of the lawyer Roy Cohn denouncing homosexuality. After intermission, Vawter appeared in sequined eye makeup, a mustache to depict the eccentric Jack Smith, the creator of the 1962 movie Flaming Creatures, which celebrated transvestite fantasy and camp posing. "They were both white male homosexuals, and they both died of AIDS," Vawter said, "Cohn was in complete denial of his homosexuality and on the attack against homosexuals. Smith was the reverse. His theatrical world had to do with the ultimate flaunting."

Sarah Ponsonby (1755 – December 9, 1831)

The Ladies of Llangollen were two upper-class women from Ireland whose relationship scandalized and fascinated their contemporaries. Eleanor Charlotte Butler was a member of one of the dynastic families of Ireland, the Butlers, the Earls (and later Dukes) of Ormond. Sarah Ponsonby was a second cousin of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough, and thus a second cousin, once removed, of his daughter the Lady Caroline Lamb. Rather than face the possibility of being forced into unwanted marriages, Butler and Ponsonby ran away together in April 1778. Their families hunted them down and forcefully tried to make them give up their plans, in vain. They decided to move to England, but ended up in Wales and set up home at Plas Newydd near the town of Llangollen in 1780. They restructured Plas Newydd in the Gothic style with draperies, arches and glass windows. Butler and Ponsonby lived together for the rest of their lives, over 50 years. Their books and glassware had both sets of initials and their letters were jointly signed.

• December 9, 1831: died. Buried at St Collen, Denbigh LL16, Regno Unito. Buried alongside: Eleanor Charlotte Butler (May 11, 1739 – June 2, 1829)
