Bell Thompson Ritchie (1893 - December 10, 1970)

Bell Thompson Ritchie (1893-1970) was a musician and vocalist. Reviewers praised her "full toned, resonant and powerful" voice, her "keen sense of dramatic", and her "unusual musical intelligence". Bell T. Ritchie moved to California in 1905 and lived in a studio home on Wilson Avenue, Fresno, CA 93704; the house was filled with antique furniture and Oriental rugs, which she collected. Her home was shared since 1936 by her friend, Nina Van Den Benden (b. 1895), a language teacher from The Hague, Holland. Ritchie is buried at Belmont Memorial Park, Fresno.

Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886)

In 1852, Emily Dickinson wrote a love letter to her friend Susan Gilbert (who will marry her brother) that read in part, “Susie, forgive me darling, for every word I say—my heart is full of you, none other than you in my thoughts.” The bulk of Dickinson’s poetry has been divided into two distinct phases, separated by an “emotional crisis” in 1861. During the first phase, beginning around 1858, she was in love with poet Kate Scott Anthon, and her poems reflected her happiness: “Her sweet Weight on my Heart a Night / Had scarcely deigned to lie- / When, stirring, for Belief's delight, / My Bride had slipped away-.” However, in April 1861 Anthon sent Dickinson a letter ending their relationship. Dickinson was devastated, suffering symptoms that modern analysts have diagnosed as panic attacks and agoraphobia. Dickinson called Anthon “a traitor,” and contemplated suicide. The breakup triggered Dickinson’s second phase of poetic productivity, marked by even greater creativity and, in the words of John F. McDermott, “a revolutionary poetic style.” The last twenty years of Dickinson’s life were spent in obscure seclusion, dressed in white. Kate Scott Anthon was Sue Gilbert Dickinson's friend from their time together (c. 1849-1850) in the Utica Female Seminary to Sue’s death in 1914. Kate and Emily met in 1859, the former then a young widow; her husband, Campbell Ladd Turner, died of tuberculosis in 1857.

Guy Hocquenghem (December 3, 1946 – August 28, 1988)

Guy Hocquenghem (3 December 1946 – 28 August 1988) was a French writer and queer theorist. Guy Hocquenghem was born in the suburbs of Paris and was educated at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. At the age of fifteen he began an affair with his high school philosophy teacher, René Scherer. They remained lifelong friends. His participation in the May 1968 student rebellion in France formed his allegiance to the Communist Party, which later expelled him because of his homosexuality. Hocquenghem taught philosophy at the University of Vincennes-Saint Denis, Paris and wrote numerous novels and works of theory. He was the staff writer for the French publication Libération. Hocquenghem was the first gay man to be a member of the Front Homosexuel d'Action Révolutionnaire (FHAR), originally formed by lesbian separatists who split from the Mouvement Homophile de France in 1971. With filmmaker Lionel Soukaz (b. 1953), Hocquenghem wrote and produced a documentary film about gay history, Race d'Ep! (1979) the last word of the title being a play on the word pédé, a French slur for gay men.  Guy Hocquenghem's Homosexual Desire (1972, English translation 1978) may be the first work of Queer Theory. Hocquenghem died of AIDS on 28 August 1988, age 41.

Thelma Wood (July 3, 1901 - December 10, 1970)

Thelma Ellen Wood was an American sculptor. Although very little of her work survives, Wood's drawings were exhibited at least once, at Milch Galleries in New York City in 1931, where they were favorably reviewed. Wood's sketchbook from a trip to Berlin is in the Barnes papers at the University of Maryland, College Park. In the fall of 1921, photographer Berenice Abbott met Wood and became her lover for a brief time. She later introduced Wood to poet Djuna Barnes (who said, “I am not a lesbian; I just loved Thelma.”). Wood also had a brief relationship with the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay during the early 1920s. Wood became involved in an affair with a wealthy woman named Henriette McCrea Metcalf, which effectively caused Barnes to end their relationship. One factor bringing on the break with Metcalf was Wood becoming involved with Margaret Behrens, a wealthy realtor and antique dealer. She moved into Behrens' home in Monroe, Connecticut. She did odd jobs for Behrens in a relationship that lasted until Wood's death 27 years later. Wood and Behrens are buried together at Park Cemetery, Bridgeport, Connecticut.
