Around the World: Moscow

I have still the flu, I'm walking around with pill for headache, watery nose and cough, but today, when I woke up, there was a slightly promise of blue sky and so I really couldn't stay inside my room. I went out like the Michelin man, all covered in different layers of dresses, and took the subway to the city centre... obviously, as soon as I was out of the Metro, it was raining :-( Well, I thought, I'm here, I'm covered, and I want to see the city, and so, I continue my walk, under a rain that was never, fortunately, too heavy to bother me too much. And strange thing, the sky was actually blue, when I could see it behind the clouds! Anyway, I walked for more or less 4 hours, I skipped lunch since the light hours are so few that I wanted to profit of all of them. Today was probably the better day for picture, I did a lot, but I chose to post only 6: I will save the others for my next pic spam appointments ;-)

No, I wasn't particularly interested in the Starsbuck Coffee, I first noticed the building behind and the nice effect of the windows with the blue sky. I was particurarly interested in the style of the building, even if it seems modern, I have the feeling that it's not, if I didn't know that it is quite impossible, I would say that it's a '60 or '70 building. Anyway, I'm like that, I notice the strangest things, and sometime my pictures have no reason if not to save in my memories the passing impression of a nice color, or of tree branches with red berry in front of a pink wall...

The style of the Starbucks building makes me think of art deco -- it's not *quite* deco, but has some of the same feel to it.

Yes, you are right, I had the same feelings, but it was too modern to be art deco and too old fashioned to be modern. Actually if it's Art Deco, maybe it's more possible that it's original, since I think that till the last of the nineteen century and the beginning of the twenty century that style was still in use in Moscow. After that, I think they moved to a less decorative style.

What's with these round designs on buildings? Must be something in the Russian psyche to tell the whole story but for that you's probably need a Dostoyevsky or Tolstoy to get it right.

Damn, too bad about your cold but at least you'll have a great memory, being sick in Russia when the cold frigid rain is falling...must be a story in that, eh?

Yes, Mick, also this is a way to build a memory LOL I would prefer a less bothering memory, but, well, you can't have all, can you? And the round buildings? They are in stark contrast with what came after, all those squared buildings. It's quite impressive to see these little colored jewels in the shadow of the squared big and grey ones. Elisa

I was just reading a review of a new book (non-gay) that might be interesting to look up while you're resting in bed in cold Russia

These are great pictures, Elisa. I would have stopped into Starbucks. I do enjoy their cafe mocha once in awhile. :P

I chucked about you likening your layers of clothing to the Michelin man. I didn't know how world wide he is known. I'm sure there are a number of Michelin tire plants, a few of which are in my province (Nova Scotia).

I hope you feel better soon!!

The Michelin Man is world reknowed and my coat is very similar to his skin, only that mine is deep purple, not white ;-) Elisa

I went inside the churches in the Kremlino, three out of the four, but the other are quite "private"; people here don't like for tourist to enter, and so I prefer not to ;-) They worship the icons, the images inside the churches, and so for them even the building is sacred. Elisa

Even through I've not been online much I always make a point to stop when I see you have new pictures up. Honestly, if you ever put them together and publish I'll be in line to buy. Beautiful as ever. (and feel better, too!)

Thank you Chrissy. Probably I don't consider my pictures worthy to be published since there are so many professional photographer out there. I'm really only an amateur, I mostly took my picture with a 30 years old camera reflex or with a very basic digital camera. Not so professional ;-) Elisa

The buildings are stunning! It doesn't even take a good photographer (talking about myself here) to make a nice shot.
Starbucks was a great disappointment, though - they didn't have green tea latte!!! Can you imagine???
**rolls eyes... again** ;)

I didn't enter the coffee so I don't know their selection, but the coffee in my hotel (it's not Starbuck, it's a Russian chain) has a wonderful milk with honey ;-) Elisa
