The Big Gay Musical (2009) directed by Casper Andreas & Fred M. Caruso

Directors: Casper Andreas
Fred M. Caruso

Writer: Fred M. Caruso (divinely inspired through)

Genre: Musical

Plot: Paul and Eddie have just begun previews for the new Off-Broadway musical "Adam and Steve Just the Way God Made 'Em." Their lives strangely mirror the characters they are playing. Paul is looking for the perfect man and Eddie is dealing with how his sexuality and faith can mix. After yet another disastrous dating experience, Paul has an epiphany. He is done dating and just wants to be a slut like the sexy chorus boys that share his dressing room. Eddie has to tell his parents that he's gay and is starring in a show that calls the bible the "Breeder's Informational Book of Living Examples". Eddie comes out to his family and Paul goes on Manhunt. Eddie's parents are destroyed by the news and Paul can't even have a good one-night stand. But after musical numbers with scantly clad tap dancing angels, a retelling of Genesis, tele-evangelists, a camp that attempts to turn gay kids straight, and a bunch of showtunes, everyone realizes that life gets better once they accept who they really are. And they are just the way God made 'em.

First of all I probably need to warn people who usually don't like musicals: The Big Gay Musical is yes a musical and so you will have also plenty of songs and ballets, but it's also a drama/comedy, and so Adam and Steve on the stage, go back to be Paul and Eddie in their everyday life and the movie follows them in their pursuit of true love. And maybe it's necessary also another warning: this is not the love story between Paul and Eddie, they are too different and in too different stage of their life, and so what they are searching in a relationship is not the same thing. Paul is experienced and tired of a never ending string of one night stands; he wants to find Mr Right and he is willing to lower his standard to find him. Paul's story is probably the most interesting, and the little scene with Brent Corrigan who plays an hustler, is really nice. I have to make a remark to Paul thought, he is quite blind: he spends most of the movie with the wrong men when the right one was right there for him to catch.

Then there is Eddie's story; at the beginning of the movie Eddie is a virgin, but he will soon loose that "characteristic". Eddie's story is not of a guy searching true love, but more og a guy searching himself. In doing so, he does a lot of mistakes, but sincerely he is lucky.

I recommend The Big Gay Musical to two different target: if you like musicals, some of the songs in it are really good, and funny; if you like comedy and romance, again, this movie has both. Plus, even if low budget, the setting, the sound and all related things, are above the average you usually find in the indie productions.

This looks too amusing to miss.

The good thing is that "apparently" it's only fun, and instead it has a deeply meaning.
