"A most remarkable homage to things Israeli, things Jewish, things human, and the love and honesty it takes to face down a country gone awry, a people prone to remembering and forgetting, a heart that knows true love and therefore knows its absence. A Small Country about to Vanish is love's survival story, between the author and her country of Israel, between Shelli and Rona, between a mother and her children, between a husband and wife. Avilan writes about Israel with the love and pain stemming from the realization that not all that we love is perfect, but we can't help loving it, or him, or her. This book almost reads itself, so sure-footed is the pacing, the ease of being drawn in despite some unease about what is written. The author does not intrude on her characters with the pointed finger of too much message forcibly delivered. A reader's ease and ability to identify with each main character is to have witnessed Avilan's magic literary show. This is a tense, taut and shocking study of freedom. Freedom to love, to live, to remember or forget how one obtained and lost those freedoms." -- Historical romance author T. T. Thomas.

Very interesting well written story by a talented author.  Definitely knows her subject matter and her setting and characters are well developed.  All kept my interest. thought provoking!

Another unexpected read that made me bask in a different world in the most wonderful way…Israel is so alive in this book that as a reader I felt the history that permeate that country. It’s a cultural joy to find books like this one.

The mark of a good story is to lose oneself in it. Most of the time as I was reading this I forgot to breathe. The author did not miss a beat. The POV changes were a little disconcerting at first, but it was a very useful device to differentiate between the different time periods and characters. Well done.

Avilan hits top marks for all criteria, and the book is a compelling study in conflicted loves—of self, of another, of a country. The thoughtful pace and vivid setting and characters serve to celebrate a masterful writing style. Set in Israel and California, the story follows childhood sweethearts to the conclusions hinted at, and publicly denied, as one woman makes a “Sophie’s choice” of impossible alternatives, chilling revelations and heart-rending decisions that will change her personal geographies of the soul and spirit in large ways.
