Have you in mind "The Kid" by Charlie Chaplin? the scenes where they look at the window of a restaurant at the people eating? (Hope to remember well, cause I see it many year ago)... Jase, the main character of this short story is in a similar situation. He is twenty three years old and has nothing: he has lost his work as dishwater some days before Christmas, he lives in an old and cold one room flat and he has no family to spent Christmas with. And even if his family would be still around, his past Christmases are nothing to remember of.

So on Christmas Eve he is outside a big department store looking other people hurry to make their last Christmas shopping and he is fantasizing about how could be a very family Christmas. Then he sees an abandoned chart full of Christmas bag and he takes it: not to steal it, but only to pretend to be like all the other people around him. And in fact he follows the chart's owner till home and gives him back his bags. But Riley is a very cute and young guy, and Jase has not heart to tell him the truth, not when he has the chance to spend an entire day with him. He wants to steal another bit of that Christmas he has never had.

Jase is a good guy born in the wrong side of the town. Maybe If he had had a chance in his life he could be a better person, and instead he is only a poor guy who tries to pass the Christmas season without hunging himself for desperation. Riley is not in a better situation, living with his aunt after being abandoned by his mother and trying to make a perfect Christmas for his three nephews. But Riley has also a big heart and the naivete that only the very young and still innocent people has. He is sweet and warm.

I like this short story (50 pages) cause its tender and heartwarming, without being too sugary. There aren't "Christmas" miracle in it, but only the love of two men who find themself under the Christmas Tree...

Years ago I started a list of interesting or noteworthy things I've seen. I thought of that list the other day and looked for it, but couldn't find it anywhere. I'm going to have to start a new one, because I simply have to put this in writing: I have seen a squirrel yawn. It was the most adorable thing! And I've seen a duck with a Mohawk. Go figure. I know certain breeds of ducks have a little topnot like that, but this is the first one I've seen, and she has left her home (it was down the street) and moved onto our pond with our duck... First Question: is it a romance? Mmm, I don't know. Well, yes define a romance is always difficult, and usually the only common points I can find are: two main characters, a love between them and an happily ever after. And with these parameters, Steel Sleet is a romance. But I can feel in this book that writing romance is not the mainly work of Eric Del Carlo.

Nickerson is a genetically shifted warriors. He lives Off-World, patrolling the Earth colonies on space and preventing the earth criminals to bring their business up there. But then he is sent again on Earth and he finishes in a trap. Now he is on run for his life and he finds a companion in BlaqJaq, a streetmuscle, a type of mercenary who has a moral code, he only works for the goods. And now he is drawn by this man, double his age, but handsome and with a gentle touch he is not used.

The story is mostly about their run amond the underwolrd tunnels to avoid the hunters who are after Nickerson, and only in two brief moment we can taste the passion between the two man, so this is my concern in classify it as a romance. But if you want to read a good fastpacing novella, this is your book.

The book is pretty good even if a little short (less then 90 pages). And I have the feeling (and hope indeed) that this is not the final point of this story, cause even if it has the HEA, it's also an open ended story, so I really want to know what happend next.

I read this book not a long ago, but when I saw the new cover by Anne Cain, wow I have to buy it again! Yes I know, I'm a covers whore (after books whore...).

Ace is a professional gambler. He plays for the sake of play and also for money. But one night he win not money but a man. A man without name, a man that his previous master holds like a pet, not a man. He calls him Spade.

After some day of acquitance, Ace and Spade slip in a quite and happy life, but something strange is happening: Spade is changing phisically, and he step by step is becoming the dream lover of Ace. So finally Ace has to admit that Spade is not human, he is a Senai, a genetically engineered servant. He is a manufact by an alien planet, Kaznian, and he crashed on Earth fourteen years before. He changes to satisfy his master's desires and he only wants what his master wants. Plus he depends from his master to live, if he remains without a master, he will die.

Ace is shocked, he thinks that all Space has said is a lie, all the love and the care, only lie. He can't feel something for someone who is not even human. But love has strange form and you can't choose who love; but Spade yes, he can: he can't choose whom obey to, but he can choose whom love. And he has choose to love Ace, and so Ace will be the... Ace of Spade.

Spade is a particular character: even if he is not the "master" in the relationship, he is the stronger character. He is the strenght of Ace. Ace is quite naive and fragile: he is 26 year old, but he seems a lot younger; he needs a paternal figure in his life, he needs love and caring.

The initial idea is quite similar to True, always by Rowan McBride: but while in True the weak character was the alien being, here it is the human. This is a little longer and maybe less tender. But it is still a good story.
