Here is my monthly post on the Top 50 M/M romance. After a month I decided to follow a routine: I will use LibraryThing (user account top50MM) to list all the titles, and every month I will draw up the top 50. To be listed for me it's enough to have published an M/M romance; I will consider all the titles in print from some publishers (specialized in LGBT fiction) and everytime someone suggest a title I will add it to the list.

Please feel free to question my method, or to suggest a different way to procede, I will be happy to consider all the suggestions.

Mapback is a term used by paperback collectors to refer to the earliest paperback books published by Dell Books, beginning in 1943. The books are known as mapbacks because the back cover of the book contains a map that illustrates the location of the action. Dell books were numbered in series. Mapbacks extend from #5 to at least #550; then maps became less of a fixed feature of the books and disappeared entirely in 1951. (Numbers 1 through 4 had no map, although a later re-publication of #4, The American Gun Mystery by Ellery Queen, added a map.).

118 Half Angel by Fanny Heaslip Lea

The artwork of the maps began with quite detailed maps, and later numbers contain more stylized ones. "The back cover map was very popular with readers and remains popular with collectors ... the Dell "mapbacks" are among the most well known vintage paperbacks."

"Dell's most memorable design innovation was not on the front but on the back covers ... the entire back covers given over to maps, or variously charts, blueprints, or what have you to represent story locale or scene of the crime: a stretch of California highway, the interior of an apartment, a sheik's "city of stones". It was an enjoyable if slightly goofy gimmick and, amazingly, managed to last nearly ten years."

167 White Fawn by Olive Higgins Prouty

Trace is a young college student. He is a very normal guy, open, pretty and happy. He likes to play and when he meets Colt, he is more than ready to play with him: but the concept of play for Trace is rather simple, a beer, a flirt, a night of joyful sex. Nothing more, nothing less. Instead Colt has other ideas.

Colt is a bit of a mystery. He is a gardener, but he is not only that; he is an ex professor, and now he seems to be happy with a more relaxing work. He seems to not have money problems, he lives alone in a comfortable little apartment. And he likes to play like Trace, but his type of games are a little more kinky: spanking, toys, nothing of extreme, but sure a bit more of what Trace would expect. And so after that first night, even if Trace enjoyed a lot all they did, he flies away, a bit scared. Only to return a second time, to prove to himself that he really likes what Colt did to him.

But Colt is a very commanding man, he is a total top and he is also older than Trace: for a kid like Trace this could be a little overwhelming, and it's not simple for him to let go and give up the control to Colt. Only when he can really trust Colt to not doing anything he doesn't want, only then they could consider to have a real relationship, and not only a night of sex here and there.

This is the classical daddy and baby relationship: Colt has not half measure, he is the master of the relationship, he can't even consider to leave some control on Trace; on the other hand, he is very good in pampering and taking care of the kid, and so, if Trace is good with that, they can have a very happy relationship together.

There is a lot of sex, actually Colt and Trace can't be together for a time without having sex. And probably this is the reason why Trace is so scared at first: he was searching for a rest and relax relationship and he found a way much committed one, a relationship that asks him to question his beliefs and his own desires... maybe too much for a young and careless guy, maybe Colt is asking Trace to grew too much and too soon.
