It's almost an impossible thing write a complete story in less than 35 pages, but Nathan James manages to do that in Check Ride.

Gilbert, Gil, is a 29 years old airplane pilot for a private company. He has the hots for Mario, an African American 32 years old fellow pilot. Mario is the wet dream of Gil, strong, handsome, skillful and gentle. When Mario asks Gil to accompanying him in a check fly of a newly renovated 727 boeing, Gil can't believe his lucky. And when, after a near deadly fly accident, Mario "comforts" Gil having mindless sex in the private bedroom of the Boeing, well, Gil is in heaven, and not since he is on air.

But the accident was not casual, and Mario and Gil need to face a nasty enemy. Waiting to confront the evil, they deepen the relationship exploring a bit of D/s plays: Gil sees fulfilled all his sexual dreams by a commanding Mario, who is more than happy to play the role of the Big Black Man for his "little" white captive. Not only the author planned a plot, but he even gave to the characters a background, arriving to hint some "youthful" complex in Gil.

All right, I hope that you "read" between my lines, and understand that I found this story more funny than other. I was true at the beginning, I'm really impressed by the ability of the author to write a complex plot in only 35 pages, packing a lot of scene, included two sex scenes involving once an hot tub and the other a shower plus a bit of hanging from the ceiling. The only thing that I didn't like is that, being a first point of view narration, Gil "feels" the necessity to speak in every moment, above all during sex, telling us when he is panting, slurping, sucking... well sometime it was a bit too much, it would be better if he remained in silence.

Director: Carlos Portugal

Writers: Carlos Portugal (writer)
Charo Toledo (writer)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

Tagline: Love Thy Neighbor...Just Don't Get Caught.

Plot: Finding love in east Los Angeles is challenging, especially for a young closeted gay man. At times, sexy and romantic.

Called a "feel good movie" by its fans, this appealing debut film of director Carlos Portugal suffers from no freshman errors, as Portugal confidently tells the story of Diego (played by the wonderful and charming René Alvarado), a young, closeted Latino, who helps his grand-mother (standout Irene DeBarri) run the family restaurant while carrying on a clandestine relationship with equally closeted Pablo (the delightful David Beron).

Diego has long felt trapped by the conservative culture of East LA and plans to move away and open an upscale restaurant, hopefully with his lover. But Pablo views their situation very differently - a point driven home when he begins dating Diego's spirited Aunt Bianca (hilarious sexpot Gladise Jimenez). At the same time, white gay men like Jonathan and Wesley are moving in, gentrifying the neighborhood. The attraction between Wesley and Diego is immediate and electric, forcing both men to reexamine their state of affairs in this entertaining comedic drama.

A "coming out" story that avoids all the tired cliches and stays committed to telling the stories of these characters, East Side Story examines bias of all kinds and features stirring performances by incredibly attractive actors. This story sweetly appeals to the romantic impulses of us all, gay and straight.

At the beginning of the twenty century, Jack is a young Englishman in Santorini; he is following a dig near a church and he makes a stunning discovery: the tomb of a man; the burial seems to be prehistoric, but there are remains from all over the age, till the last, an eighteen century coin. The peasants are murmuring of evil, the tomb was not in a holy place, and the body was chained. But Jack is not a man who can be scared by superstition, and so he takes with him the skeleton, actually freeing it from its "eternal" rest.

Then Jack begins to receive strange letters from a man named Belas, a man who promises to Jack fame and fortune in exchange of very little from him: his blood.

The story now resembles a bit the myth of Eros and Psyche, with Eros pretending by his spouse that she never looks at him when he visits her at night. Belas asks to Jack to wait for him at night, blindfolded and naked, ready to satisfy Belas' desires. But probably Belas also satisfies Jack's desires, since the sexual attention of Belas are not unwelcomed by Jack. And even when Jack realizes that Belas is killing people in the village, he can't blame the man who is searching his vengeance; in the contrary, Jack offers himself as weapon for Belas' vengeance.

But then enters Gabriel, a young doctor. Gabriel fancies Jack, and he is convinced that Jack is suffering from madness... Belas is not real, it's a figment of Jack's mind, and what Jack imputes to Belas, in reality are Jack's actions... who is right? Is it possible that this is not a paranormal event, but only the oddity of an ill mind?

The story is very well written; it's a very good mix of paranormal and historical, letting the reader wondering till the end about the true nature of the tale. In the end Jack is only a man with a deep need of love, a need he brings with him since he was a child, a need that he tries to fulfill in everyway... Belas, Gabriel, are only tools for his trìhirst of love.

Belas could be real and if he is real, he is a man who has suffered for so long that his mind is cloudy with pain; if he isn't real, he is only the true nature of Jack, the passionate and outspoken man who Jack has never had the courage to be.

Gabriel is the man who bears the sin of his fathers. He is not a bad man, but he is too avid of fame; probably he, in a way, really loves Jack, but he is not the man who can save Jack, he is not enough strong.

At almost 300 pages, Revenant is an historical / paranormal / mystery romance... all genre are mixed together in a very good way.
