Monthly Appointment with My Reading List

My reading list is alway changing, and some months are slower than other. For this reason I think I will limit to list the first 100 titles, that of course I will NOT be able to read in the next month, but at least it can give you an idea of what I'm reading. Moonspun by Lee Benoit

There are various points of this book I liked, it has an high impact on an emotional level, it has a good pace in the thriller sub-plot and the supporting characters are good, sometime even better than the main characters (the relationship between Enzo and Marcello, even in the way it’s ended by the author, is probably the most original side of this novel). What probably nagged me most is that I read this novel more as a “contemporary” fantasy than a real thriller-romance novel: the way the romance between Landon and Kirith starts, the sudden stop of the thriller plot to the as much as suddenly starting sometime later, with even more rage and violence, all the mafia-drugs family plot, it was a bit too much. Landon is an unwilling mercenary, forced by his older brothers with violence and coercion; already here to me was a little too much, but soon after, in the aftermath of a failed mission, Landon is captive of Kirith, the second heir of a drugs lord, who wants to take his vengeance against the man who sent enemies in his home, and danger near his daughter, having Landon raped and enslaved. Of course, being this a romance, and romance cannot be born from rape, Kirith will change his mind, and Landon will become a willing pawn in a very mild claim: 3 months of Landon acting as Kirith’s boy toy and he will be free. I will not go further in the plot, enough to say that there is another sudden turn that, in a way, will help Landon to rebalance his relationship with Kirith and, even if it can sound harsh, will give deepness to Kirith: until then Kirith was too “stylish”, too perfect, even a bit boring.
As I said, I found probably more interesting the supporting characters more than Landon and Kirith: above all Enzo, who, in his multi-facets personality, gave deepness even to the villain, Marcello. Another character that was interesting, even if not one that many will like with his pretty face and his lack of rebellion, is Chase: I think that a story centred around Enzo or Chase, even not among them, would be a good one.
I advice the future reader of this romance, that this is a type of romance that not all will like: rape, violence, BDSM that is more a punishment than a different type of relationship between lovers, these are all side of the story that will alienate many readers. But if you want a story were the bad are badder and the good are not so good after all, than this is a good example.

The first thing to surprise you for a Loose Id novel is that it’s not that sexy; now don’t get me wrong, I love Loose Id’s production right for that reason, they are able to bring you good sexy stories, stories where, readers like me, don’t get tired reading sex scene since they are not recreational activities, but essential elements of the story. Well Moonspun is more on the fairy tale level, the sex is there but it’s not essential, in a way that, sometime, I had to go back re-reading some scenes to understand if our heroes did something or not, and giving that they are living together since more or less the day after they met, it’s quite strange that they didn’t consume their love immediately after that.The second side of the story that I liked is the paranormal shade of it that never becomes so centre stage to overwhelm the love story between Jamie and Tomas “Spider”; as the blurb itself tells, so no spoiler here, Spider is a very special weaver, he is forced to weave by the moon, and indeed his complete name is Tomás Tejedor de Luna, moon-weaver. Tomas believes this is a “mission” of some sort, something his grandfather passed to him and that he will have to pass to someone else; he strongly believes his weaving have a meaning, even maybe telling the future, but sincerely, both his works than his grandfather’s ones can be simply the output of a very gifted master weaver. And the force that pushes Spider to weave with the moon can be simply self-suggestion, something that he brings upon himself since he wants it.
I’m not telling that the story Lee Benoit created is not true or unrealistic, I’m telling that it was so much true and believable, and that it seems possible. And I really liked the realistic side of it intertwined with the magic, a magic that was not pushing, a magic that felt ancient and homely.
The love story between Jamie and Spider was sweet and tender, again it was a mix between pink glasses romance and day-to-day life; it was love at first sight, and both Jamie and Spider felt pull into it almost without having the chance to think. But once they were together, every piece felt in the right place, and they moved together like in the same flow, taking the same rhythm, sharing everything, and learning everything, even love, even sex, together. There was not teacher or student, only two young men without near relatives and the strong need to build a family together, a family made by the two of them, and maybe a parrot, a cat and some other pets.
