New York City F.B.I. team leader Samuel Shaughnessy lives for his job and immediate family. Once upon a time he was a firm believer in love and happily ever after. Now he stays clear from personal entanglements and follows a very strict code of rules. Sexually active and emotionally unavailable works for him just fine. A former Houston fireman, Machlan O'Bannon now manages a sports bar and is ready to become the man he always wanted to be: out, proud and drama free. His family wants to lock him in the closet, but he just wants to meet the man of his dreams. One man is as high strung as the other is laid back. Mac has some decisions to make and Sam has a serial killer to catch. Their lives are not only different, but miles apart. The timing is bad and intentions unclear. They don't want to be involved... but can they stay apart?

What enticed me to read this novel is to discover why an apparently accomplished young man wanted to be a perfect submissive.

Josh is young, sweet and with a gentle nature. He is also a published author, successful enough to be able to live in a nice Chicago condo and not having to abide to a 9 to 5 o’clock job. Despite this, Josh is craving, literally craving, for a Master; he has even underwent a formal training, but at today he is still without a contract. Usually at the end of the trial period his prospective Masters don’t formalize the contract and Josh is always more discouraged, until the day his trainer, Nicholas, proposes him to move to Montana for a trial contract with his business partner Wade.

On the other side we learn Wade’s story; from a wealthy family and with a planned life path in front of him, Wade left everything to move to Montana. I think he has not really the core of a true Dominant, he simply wants back the independence he left behind when he decided to agree to his parents’s project life for him. Being a Dominant is for Wade regaining that independence.

Josh and Wade click together since, for me, they are not ordinary sub and Dom. A real dominant would have kicked out Josh that first day, when he started to behave badly; a real sub would have never, ever considered to be so disrespected of his Dom’s house and rules. To me? I don’t care if they are not true sub and Dom, what I like of them is the gentle manners of both, the fact they really need sweetness more than passion; if passion comes along fine, but first of all they need to feel loved and cherished.

Maybe this time I’m not very “concerned” about this Bittersweet Dreams title (they are usually romance without an happily ever after), because, well, I don’t really believe it. Meaning that, I don’t believe there is not a some sort of happily ever after for 35 years old Kyle and his 18 years old hustler Jesse, even if the author wants to surprise the reader.

I will not disclose the “surprise” enough to say that there are various reasons why I think Kyle will not proceed with his intended purposes, also since I believe it’s not really legal, and to Jesse would be enough to have a medium experience lawyer to not only going out from this situation but maybe having Kyle in trouble too. True I’m not really a specialist of immigration law, and Jesse is an illegal immigrant, so maybe for him his different, but again, I really hope Kyle will change his mind.

This is a short story, less than 30 pages, but they are enough to give a background story to both Kyle than Jesse, that is maybe the reason why I hope for both of them to have an happily ever after. Despite the age difference, I think they would be good to each other, and there is really nothing against them, on the contrary, I think Jesse has a good heart, and he has already fallen a little for Kyle.
