Joseph Caldwell (born October 2, 1928)

A playwright and novelist who has been awarded the Rome Prize for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Joseph Caldwell has been praised by critics for his "precise prose," and "subtle humor that edges in to the absurd." He is the author of five novels in addition to the Pig Trilogy including In Such Dark Places, The Uncle From Rome, and Bread for the Baker's Child. Caldwell currently lives New York City and is working on various post-Pig writing projects.

Novelist and playwright Joseph K. Caldwell was born on October 2, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His education included studies at Marquette University, Columbia University, and three years in the graduate program of the School of Drama at Yale University. Caldwell's talent and promise as a playwright were recognized early in his career: he received two "John Golden Fellowships in Play writing" at Yale University (1956-1957) and an American Broadcasting Company Fellowship in Playwriting, also at Yale.

Joseph Caldwell's plays have been produced off-Broadway, as well as being transformed into television scripts. New York productions of his plays include Cockeyed Kite at the Actors' Playhouse, The Downtown Holy Lady at the Greenwich Mews Theatre, and Jack Fallon, Fare Thee Well by the Joseph Jefferson Theatre Company. The School of Drama at Yale University produced two of his plays, namely, The Bridge and Clay for the Statues of Saints.

The last thing Pauly expects during a simple night out is to wind up embroiled in a cab chase. Then again, if something weird happens, it made sense that it would happen to him. He can only count himself lucky that his cab driver is smart, attractive, and seems to like him, even with the drama.

Being involved in a situation that requires police attention isn't something Randy's ever aspired to, but he can't resent it when it's brings Pauly into his life. Pauly's just about perfect, as far as Randy can tell, but that means he's unlikely to be interested in anything more than friendship with a guy like Randy. That's better than nothing, right?

James isn't looking for a relationship. He's not even looking for a 'friends with benefits' arrangement. That's why he finds his obsession with two guys he picks up in a bar so bizarre. He's too busy for love, of course, but becoming friends with the two men somehow leads to wanting things he shouldn't. Even more complicated is the fact that he can't seem to decide which of them he's more interested in -- the stunningly hot Pauly or the more quietly attractive Randy.

All three men have decisions to make, and choices to face, not an easy task. There's no way the three of them could ever build a relationship together… is there?

Mind Magic by Poppy Dennison

Nice and almost “familiar” paranormal romance, it was like the author was thinking, it’s already a paranormal story, why I have to overdo it with special effects? And so Simon is a next door guy who happens to be a mage, and Gray is a single dad who happens to be the Alpha of a werewolf pack. But both Simon than Gray are leading a simple life, Gray is not some sort of general in command, and while he has enforcers, they are more like friends than soldiers.

When Simon rescues 5 kids of the pack from a rogue demon, he also puts himself in danger and of course Gray will extend the pack’s protection to the young mage. And no, there is not a magical mating pull that pushes Gray towards Simon, again it’s all in the individual choice: if, and when Gray will choose his mate, there will be a binding ceremony, but Gray is totally free to pick up his mate, woman or man, friend or stranger, human, shifter or mage.

There is danger for Simon, but again, that was not the main focus of the story; it was more Simon trying to adapt to the life in a pack than them worrying for the outside menace. Really, sometime I wanted to smile to the naiveté of some of Simon’s attitude, like when he has to contact an ancient vampire he doesn’t know… he leaves a post-it attached to the front door!

One nice touch in the story is that not Simon or Gray are “heroes”, but ordinary men; Gray has even grey hairs (yes, I know, he is a grey wolf, his name is Gray and he has grey hairs… well, he is living his name ;-)) and he has trouble managing his kid who is approaching teenage years.
