The Trust by Shira Anthony & Venona Keyes

Quite complex sci-fi novel, it’s set in a contemporary time but with high impact sci-fi touches. Jake is a special op for an agency linked to the CIA; when he was hired he was still a college student, and I think he approached this job with the starry eyes of a young man thinking he was doing something to change the world, but also something really cool. Plus he was hired by Trace, who was a slightly older man, from a wealthy family and with an aura of experience that made him a magnet to Jake’s young libido. There is nothing of overtly sexual between Jake and Trace, and actually until way into the novel, there is no hint that Jake’s interest in Trace is more personal than professional, but to the reader it was clear that Jake was mourning the loss of a lover. Yes since, when the novel starts, Trace is dead, and the only link Jake has with him is a chip with Trace’s memories implanted in Jake.

I cannot really explain the plot without giving out the story, it’s quite complex and in a way, very technological, so deep into the matters sometime I had difficult to follow it. I have the feeling this story would be as cream for a cat to the geeky readers, those who reveal with all these nanotech stuff.

The Trust is not a classical romance, actually there is little romance in the story, so little that I think you can count in the fingers of your hands how many pages there are with the two main heroes together. I was actually looking at the numbers of the pages quickly reaching the final ones and wondering when one hero was supposed to meet the other. But in the end, I have to say that it was not really important: the relationship between the two men is so strong that it doesn’t need the physical touch, and neither once I had the feeling that these two were not in love or were not supposed to be together in the end, only maybe not in the classical way I was expecting.

Craig Lee (1956 - October 8, 1991)

One of the most wonderful and sharpest thorns in the rose garden of underground culture, Craig Lee, died at home last week of AIDS-related illness on October 8, 1991. He was 37. (Picture: Alice Bag and Craig Lee)

Writer, critic, producer and musician, Craig roamed the outer extremities of the local alternative scene. Most people will remember his influence on Los Angeles music during the early days of the punk-rock movement. He was the controversial music editor of LA Weekly for two years during a crucial period of its evolution and was a regular contributor to its pages for a decade.

Craig was also a music reviewer for the L.A. Times and a frequent contributor to L.A. Style, The Advocate and various fanzines. Though he was a rock critic he also enjoyed reviewing films, plays, demonstrations and exotic locales. Lately he had begun writing fiction. Three of his stories will be published in gay men's anthologies.

Craig was sometimes controversial because his extreme views were taken for snobbery. His unshakably opinionated views were impish, catty, incendiary. But Craig's most sincere concern was the advocacy of hometown talent and the promotion of Los Angeles as a rising star. Craig initiated and produced the LA Weekly Rock Music Awards, based upon a reader generated poll for selecting and awarding the best L.A.-based musicians. He co-authored the book Hardcore California: A History of Punk and New Wave.

Jacquie Bishop (born October 8, 1965)

Jacquie Bishop is a native New Yorker, Boston-based writer and founding member of MABA, the Mass Black LGBT Alliance. She now lives in Dorchester with her partner Kelley Ready.

Jacquie Bishop and Kelley Ready have been together since 1995. "I understand the euphoria that people are feeling [to get married], and I've been involved in gay politics long enough to fully appreciate what's happening right now, but I just don't need to be running out and getting married," said Bishop.
