I have the feeling TJ Klune had much fun writing this sequel to his Bear, Otter and the Kid. This is basically a family novel, so much that Bear and Otter have an equal share of importance than them and Ty, the kid. But it’s not only their family, it’s also Otter and Creed’s (Bear’s best friend and Otter’s brother) family, Anna’s (Bear’s previous girlfriend) family, and the makeshift family Bear and Otter created for Ty, made of his babysitter, his friends, his teachers… it’s a choral novel about family value.

But it’s not all saccharin and good feelings, because Klune’s ironic character sometime makes its appearance, and he often sends messages to his readers, of course referring to the previous novel, but also to the conversation around it, to the online groups he frequents, maybe even to some fan emails he received. So there is a lot of Bear and Otter, but there is also a lot of TJ in this novel.

It’s also a romance, more bordering on the sweet than the erotic; sure, these two guys are young and horny, and so as soon as love enters their mind, sex is the obvious means to express it, but there aren’t really graphic detailed sex scenes, more imagines and hints of them (like Otter under the shower and all what it brings to mind to Bear, Otter’s sexy voice, and again, all what it brings to mind to Bear… it seems that everything Otter does brings to mind sex to Bear).

One warning though, you have to read Bear, Otter and the Kid before this one, because this is more than a sequel, this is basically a continuation. At the end of the previous book, a lot of things were hanging and they will find closure here, so much that there is practically only few weeks between the end of the previous plot and the beginning of this one. On the contrary, at the end of Who We Are, a cycle is closed, but not the universe, and maybe there will be space for other characters to develop their own personal love story.
