Kevin Luong walks to the ocean’s edge with a broken heart. Remembering a legend his mother told him, he lets seven tears fall into the sea. “I just want one summer—one summer to be happy and in love.” Instead, he finds himself saving a mysterious boy from the Pacific—a boy who later shows up on his doorstep professing his love. What he doesn’t know is that Morgan is a selkie, drawn to answer Kevin’s wish. As they grow close, Morgan is caught between the dangers of the human world and his legacy in the selkie community to which he must return at summer’s end.

Meet and connect with C. B. Lee: C. B. Lee is a bisexual writer, rock climber and pinniped enthusiast based in California. Lee enjoys reading, hiking and other outdoor pursuits. Seven Tears At High Tide is a first novel.

Hello there! Thank you for having me here today. I'm C.B., a bisexual woman who grew up on the California coast. I'm a first generation Asian American and am very excited to introduce more characters whose backgrounds are like my own. My current novel is Seven Tears at High Tide, a story about falling in love and navigating difficult choices.

1) What’s the easiest thing about writing?
The easiest thing is to imagine it in your head and think of what you want-- the hard part comes when you want to translate that into something concrete, get it down on paper.

2) Name one author (living or dead) you’d like to write with?
I very deeply admire the late Terry Pratchett, and would love to write with him and really learn more about his amazing worldbuilding and extensive magic systems. I love his sense of humor and how well crafted all of his novels are; he was such a huge influence on me and I think it would be amazing to work with him.

3) Tell us about your cover and how it came about.
I designed this cover! This was one of the headers I made for my website, and also a graphic to announce the my novel. I wanted something simple that would convey the magic of the story and settled on clean silhouettes that would draw the focus to a dramatic scene; a boy watching a mysterious tail vanish into the sea. Later when I was talking to the publishing team at Duet, they all loved this graphic and with some artistic direction from the amazing C.B. Messer (we share initials, it's a really fun coincidence) we reimagined it to be the cover you see today.

4) Is this book part of a series? Do you have ideas that could make it into a series? If it is a series, tell us a little about it.
Not officially, but I haven't quite closed the door on this universe quite yet! I have a few ideas for a prequel actually, and would love to write about Morgan's older sister Naida, who spent a year on land searching for more information about the scientists who have been hunting the selkies.

5) Word association. Tell us the first thing that comes to mind when you read these words.
Ketchup- FRIES
Flakes- CORN
Elastic- BAND
Timer- SOULMATES
Google- CHEESE
