Meet the author: A. M. Leibowitz is a queer spouse, parent, feminist, and book-lover falling somewhere on the Geek-Nerd Spectrum. Ze keeps warm through the long, cold western New York winters by writing about life, relationships, hope, and happy-for-now endings. In between noveling and editing, ze blogs coffee-fueled, quirky commentary on faith, culture, writing, books, and hir family."I’m an author and editor by day, a spouse, parent, and activist by night. An Act of Devotion is my fourth novel. It was inspired by the work many of my fellow activists are doing. I usually write literary LGBTQ+ fiction with relational themes (love, friendship, family). This is my first genuine romance."
1) Where do you find your inspiration?
Usually from real-life situations I or people I know have been through. I dress them up a bit, and they aren’t exact matches, but they’re definitely inspired by reality.
2) When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Back when I was blogging, doing commentary on issues in the church. I’ve been writing for years, but until I did it all the time, I never really put myself in that category.
3) Do your characters become like real people to you?
Oh, yes. Characters in books I read do as well. I like to say I don’t read or write a book—I have a relationship with it.
4) If you weren’t a writer, what else would you like to have done?
I was going to be a lactation consultant, a professional who works with breastfeeding parents. I even wrote an educational program as my graduate thesis.
5) What do you want your tombstone to say?
Just my name and dates. I’d like to hope my legacy is more than what’s written on a stone in a cemetery.
