1) This is simply a terrific historical romance. The prose is tight and descriptive without being distracting and the book has a very tight plot that sweeps you along in a historical setting that is very convincing. But what truly makes this book stand out are the characters. They are vivid and believable and the reader cares very deeply about what happens to the two protagonists. But more than that, both characters feel fresh and interesting. I don't feel like I've ever known two characters quite like this, especially the way they come to love each other.
2) This is a great book for those who love historicals. I really loved the characters and the passion that flows between them. The author also does a go job bringing the time period of the story alive. Fans of this author will not be disappointed.
3) Extremely well done historical with a vivid beginning and great characters separated by ideology. Thoroughly and darkly enjoyable.
4) This well-crafted love story is so much more than an enemies-to-lovers tale, although it contains many of the elements I love about that particular trope. The author presents us with two finely developed characters, both with believable and firmly opposing convictions, who bridge that gap painfully but with care and without sacrificing the other's integrity. I must admit that I was partial to big, gruff Silas Mason, Dom's werewolf, who comes across to the reader vividly, but the story undeniably works best in depicting the space and tension between the two men and how, in the end, the issues between them are resolved. As a sequel, this book does suffer from the usual issue of dropping the reader in the middle of other well-established relationships. I feel that without having read the short story and preceding novel (I have read both), it might be difficult to be as invested in the fates of our protagonists' compatriots and have downgraded slightly for this reason. Regardless, this was one of my favorite reads this year.
