Anna Freud was the sixth and last child of Sigmund Freud and Martha Bernays. Dorothy Trimble Tiffany Burlingham was an American child psychoanalyst and educator. Burlingham became Freud's life partner and companion, although the sexual nature of their intimacy remains unclear. Burlingham moved to Vienna in 1925 to begin her work in psychoanalysis. She and Freud became close friends and began their life-long collaboration on developing children's therapies and psychoanalysis. Anna published a series of studies with Dorothy on the impact of stress on children and the ability to find substitute affections among peers when parents cannot give them. Burlingham preceded Freud in death by 3 years, and her absence from Freud's life was extremely difficult for the surviving partner. Freud died in 1982. Her ashes were placed in a marble shelf next to her parents' ancient Greek funeral urn. Her lifelong friend Dorothy Burlingham also rests there.

At The Assumption & St Nicolas (High Street, Etchingham, East Sussex, TN19 7AR), there is a XV century memorial brass to Elizabeth Etchingham and Agnes Oxenbridge. Both are depicted, with equal force, turned towards each other in semi-profile, a design shift that only began by 1480. The workshop charged with creating the brass broke from its pattern of distanced poses when creating this particular example. The iconography suggests two women who shared an affectionate relationship: their gowns are arranged in such a way as to suggest movement towards each other. They look directly at each other. The simple brass perhaps tells a complex story of intimacy between the women. The parish church is Grade I listed and was built around 1366-9 by Sir William de Etchingham, who is buried in the church. It is regarded as one of the finest medieval churches in Sussex.

Frederic Leighton remained a bachelor and rumours of his having an illegitimate child with one of his models in addition to the supposition that Leighton may have been homosexual continue to be debated today. He certainly enjoyed an intense and romantically tinged relationship with the poet Henry William Greville whom he met in Florence in 1856.
