Albert Gilman (died December 22, 1989)

Roger Brown (1925–1997) (Location: Willow Pond Knoll, Lot 11000), professor at Harvard University from 1952 until 1957 and from 1962 until 1994, and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1957 until 1962. During his time at the University of Michigan, he met Albert Gilman, later a Shakespeare scholar and a professor of English at Boston University. Gilman and Brown were partners for over 40 years until Gilman's death from lung cancer in 1989. Brown's sexual orientation and his relationship with Gilman were known to a few of his closest friends, and he served on the editorial board of The Journal of Homosexuality from 1985, but he did not come out publicly until 1989. Brown chronicled his personal life with Gilman and after Gilman's death in his memoir. Brown died in 1997, and is buried next to Gilman (Location: Willow Pond Knoll, Lot 11000).

Edith Lewis (December 22, 1882 - August 11, 1972)

Willa Cather was an American author. In 1923, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours. At the beginning of her college career at the University of Nebraska in the late 19th century, she called herself Dr. William and dressed virtually in male drag. By the end of her college years, her presentation was considerably more feminine, but she continued her amorous relationships with other women. These included her college friend Louise Pound; the Pittsburgh socialite Isabelle McClung, with whom Cather traveled to Europe and was involved for about twelve years; the opera singer Olive Fremstad; the pianist Yaltah Menuhin; and most notably, the editor Edith Lewis, with whom Cather lived the last 39 years of her life. The two women lived together in a series of apartments in New York City from 1908 until the writer's death in 1947. Cather selected Lewis as the literary trustee for her estate. Edith Lewis, author of the biography Willa Cather Living (1953), died in 1972 in the apartment the couple had shared. They are buried near to each other in Old Burying Ground, Jaffrey Center, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.

George Eliot (November 22, 1819 – December 22, 1880)

Edith Jemima Simcox (21 August 1844 – 15 September 1901) was a British writer, trade union activist, and early feminist. In 1875 she and Emma Paterson became the first women to attend the Trades Union Congress as delegates. She lived at 60 Dean Street, London. From 1879-1882 she was a member of the London School Board representing Westminster. George Augustus Simcox and William Henry Simcox were her brothers. Simcox uses her journal as a private diary in which she confides personal matters, including her secret love for the novelist George Eliot (1819-1880) and her pain that the love is not returned. Simcox's journal entries continued for nineteen years after Eliot's death on December 22, 1880. Edith Simcox loved Eliot sexually and nonsexually although Eliot returned her love in neither sense, and Simcox sustained many positive nonsexual relationships with women who reciprocated her friendship. In her public life Simcox dedicated her time, energy, and writing to worthwhile causes that would improve the survival and wholeness of men and women, but especially to help provide better economic, educational, and social opportunities for women. Simcox loved George Eliot, who was twenty-five years older than she, from the time they met in 1872, when Simcox was preparing her review of Middlemarch, until her own death on September 15, 1901. On July 16, 1878, she writes: "The history of the years I have known her might be told in two words--Love and Pain--endless, intense". In the first entry of the Autobiography, dated March 1876, Simcox acknowledges that her love avails nothing; on May 13, 1880 she mentions having received an "unhappy letter" in which Eliot referred to herself as "a wife with a wife's supreme and sufficing love"; and Eliot frequently strongly recommended that Simcox renounce her love and find herself a husband.

Gustaf Gründgens (December 22, 1899 - October 7, 1963)

Gustaf Gründgens (1899–1963) was one of Germany's most famous and influential actors of the XX century, and artistic director of theatres in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. His career continued unimpeded through the years of the Nazi regime; the extent to which this can be considered as deliberate collaboration with the Nazis is hotly disputed. In 1923 he joined the Kammerspiele in Hamburg, where he also appeared as a director for the first time, collaborating with the author Klaus Mann, the son of Thomas Mann, and his sister Erika. Gründgens married Erika Mann in 1926; they divorced three years later. From 1936 to 1946, Gründgens was married to the famous German actress Marianne Hoppe in what was widely seen as a lavender marriage. On October 7, 1963, while traveling around the world, Gründgens died in Manila of an internal hemorrhage. It has never been ascertained whether or not he committed suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills. His last words, written on an envelope, were, "I believe I have taken too many sleeping pills; I feel a bit weird, let me sleep ."

Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988)

Jean-Michel Basquiat was an artist. He first achieved notoriety as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s where the hip hop, post-punk, and street art movements had coalesced. By the 1980s, he was exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his art in 1992. Basquiat’s art focused on "suggestive dichotomies,” such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, and figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a "springboard to deeper truths about the individual,” as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism, while his poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at age 27.

Judy Matlack (September 9, 1898 – December 22, 1982)

May Sarton is the pen name of Eleanore Marie Sarton, an American poet, novelist, and memoirist. In 1945 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she met Judy Matlack, who became her partner for the next thirteen years. They separated in 1956, when Sarton's father died and Sarton moved to Nelson, New Hampshire. Honey in the Hive (1988) is about their relationship. In her memoir At Seventy, she reflected on Judy's importance in her life and how her Unitarian Universalist upbringing shaped her. Sarton later moved to York, Maine. Matlack died in 1982. In 1990, Sarton suffered a stroke, severely reducing her ability to concentrate and write. After several months, she was able to dictate her final journals, starting with Endgame, which celebrated the joys of her life. Although many of her earlier works, such as Encounter in April, contain vivid erotic female imagery, May Sarton often emphasized in her journals that she did not see herself as a "lesbian" writer, instead wanting to touch on what is universally human about love in all its manifestations. She died of breast cancer on July 16, 1995, and is buried in Nelson, New Hampshire.

Lance Loud (June 26, 1951 – December 22, 2001)

Alanson Russell "Lance" Loud (June 26, 1951 – December 22, 2001) was an American magazine columnist and new wave rock-n-roll performer. Loud is best known for his 1973 appearance in An American Family, a pioneer reality television series that featured his coming out, leading to his status as an icon in the gay community. Loud was born in La Jolla, California, while his father was in the United States Navy. He spent his early childhood with his parents and four siblings in Eugene, Oregon, and his later childhood and adolescence in Santa Barbara, California. When he was 14, Loud discovered Andy Warhol, The Factory, and The Velvet Underground. He later became penpals with Warhol. Loud's fame came with An American Family, a documentary of his family's life, which was broadcast in the U.S. on PBS in 1973, drawing 10 million viewers and causing considerable controversy. The show was based in Santa Barbara, California. Loud moved to New York City, driven by his obsession with the Velvet Underground and everything related to Warhol. He became a regular at Max's Kansas City and attended Charles Ludlam productions at La Mama, with luminaries such as Jackie Curtis (who later became a close Loud family friend) and Holly Woodlawn. Shortly after the series ended, Loud appeared on The Dick Cavett Show, performing with a working version of what would later become the band "Mumps" (which at that point included Delilah, Michelle and Kevin in the line-up), under the name "Loud". When Loud retired from music, he became a noted columnist for several magazines, including The Advocate, Details, Interview, and Creem. In 2001, Loud entered the Carl Bean hospice in Los Angeles, California, suffering from HIV and hepatitis C. Realizing he was dying, Loud called the Raymonds back to film again, expressing dissatisfaction with the way An American Family ended and how the family members were portrayed in it. His wish was that the Louds be portrayed as the family Loud knew them to be. While in hospicecare, he wrote his final article, "Musings on Mortality". On December 22, 2001, Lance Loud died of liver failure as a result of hepatitis C and a co-infection with HIV. He was 50 years old. Portions of Loud's memorial gathering in the garden of Hollywood's Chateau Marmont are included in the documentary, A Death in An American Family, including tributes by his many friends. A rendition of "Over the Rainbow" was sung by Loud's friend, Rufus Wainwright, while accompanied on piano by Wainwrights's mother Kate McGarrigle.

Marc Allégret (December 22, 1900 - November 3, 1973)

Marc Allégret (22 December 1900 – 3 November 1973) was a French screenwriter and film director. Born in Basel, Basel-Stadt, Switzerland, he was the elder brother of Yves Allégret. Marc was educated to be a lawyer. Allégret became André Gide's lover when he was fifteen and Gide was forty-seven. Later, Marc was to fall briefly under the spell of Cocteau, who Gide feared would "corrupt" him. Marc's father, Elie Allégret, had originally been hired by Gide's mother to tutor her son in light of his weak grades in school, after which he and his charge became fast friends. In 1895 Elie was best man at Gide's wedding. After filming a 1927 trip to the Congo with Gide, he chose to pursue a career in the motion picture industry. His relationship with Gide ended after that trip, as Allégret found out that he preferred women after having experiences with Congolese women. They nevertheless remained close friends until Gide's death in 1951. After working and training as an assistant director, in 1931 he directed his first feature Mam'zelle Nitouche and the following year received much acclaim for his film, Fanny. He went on to a long career during which he wrote numerous scripts and directed more than fifty films.He died in 1973 and was interred in the Cimetière des Gonards in Versailles, France.

Mary Josephine Bedford (1861 – December 22, 1955)

Lilian Violet Cooper was a medical practitioner in Queensland, Australia. She was the first female doctor registered in Queensland. During WWI Cooper volunteered with the Scottish Women's Hospital Service after was she was turned down by the Australian Army as female doctors were not wanted. She assisted people on the front line in France and Serbia and was in charge of the ambulance division, with all female drivers (including her close friend Mary Josephine Bedford). Operating in tents close to the front line, Cooper was later awarded the Order of St Sava from the Serbian King for her wartime efforts. Mary Josephine Bedford was a philanthropist in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, who was involved in family welfare and children's development through her involvement with the Playground Association and the Crèche and Kindergarten Association. She was awarded the Order of St Sava for her services as an ambulance driver in WWI. Mary Josephine Bedford was born in 1861 in England. In her student days, she shared accommodation with Lilian Cooper, who became her lifelong friend and companion. They immigrated to Brisbane together in 1891. It is reported on the blog-page Lesbians in 1900 Brisbane that, following the death of Dr Cooper, Josephine Bedford offered their Kangaroo Point home to the Anglican Church next door, St Mary's. Apparently the offer was refused. Bedford then offered the property to the Sisters of Charity, a Catholic order, who accepted the donation, which was to be used to care for the sick and dying. This property was the forerunner of the well-known Mount Olivet hospice, now St Vincent's. The blog Jottings postulates that the stained-glass windows that were donated to St Mary's Anglican by Bedford in memory of Cooper may contain homosexual symbolism. The final, moving piece to this story is the grave-site of the two women, who are buried together in Toowong Cemetery; on the top, Dr Cooper's headstone, and underneath it that of Josephine Bedford, with the inscriptions “Life-long friend of the above”.

Maurice Grosser (October 23, 1903 - December 22, 1986)

Critic and composer Virgil Thomson was a pioneer in creating a specifically American form of classical music that is at once "serious" yet whimsically sardonic. He is best known as Gertrude Stein’s collaborator in two operas, Four Saints in Three Acts (1934) and The Mother of Us All (1947). In 1925, in Paris, he cemented a relationship with painter Maurice Grosser, who was to become his life partner and frequent collaborator; for example, Grosser directed Four Saints in Three Acts and devised the scenario for The Mother of Us All; though Grosser stated that other scenarios were equally possible, his scenario is published in the printed score. In many ways, Thomson lived an openly gay life. He and Grosser lived at the Hotel Chelsea, where he presided over a largely gay salon that attracted many of the leading figures in music and art and theater, including Leonard Bernstein, Tennesse Williams, and many others. He also encouraged many younger composers and literary figures such as Ned Rorem, Lou Harrison, John Cage, Frank O'Hara, and Paul Bowles. Thomson died on September 30, 1989, only three years after the death of Grosser.

Robert Allerton (March 20, 1873 – December 22, 1964)

Robert Allerton was heir to a Chicago banking and stockyard fortune created by his father, Samuel Allerton (1828–1914), one of the founders of Chicago's Union Stock Yards. Robert Allerton and his adopted son, John Gregg Allerton (1899–1986), transformed their country house, The Farms, into a central Illinois showplace estate, with activity climaxing in the 1920s and early 1930s. Allerton also pursued ties with the University of Illinois. In 1919 while Allerton lived at The Farms, he was asked by the University to serve on the Campus Plan Commission. This association continued until the completion of the 1923 Master Plan of the area south of the Auditorium. In 1926, Allerton established the Allerton Scholarships in American architecture. Annually, he invited graduating students in architecture and landscape architecture to The Farms.

Srinivasa Ramanujan (December 22, 1887 – April 26, 1920)

Godfrey Harold "G. H." Hardy was an English mathematician, known for his achievements in number theory and mathematical analysis. He is the main character at David Leavitt The Indian Clerk (2007), which depicts his Cambridge years and the relationship with John Edensor Littlewood and Srinivasa Ramanujan. Starting in 1914, he was the mentor of the Indian mathematician Ramanujan. Hardy almost immediately recognized Ramanujan's extraordinary albeit untutored brilliance, and Hardy and Ramanujan became close collaborators. In an interview by Paul Erdős, when Hardy was asked what his greatest contribution to mathematics was, Hardy unhesitatingly replied that it was the discovery of Ramanujan. He called their collaboration "the one romantic incident in my life." Socially he was associated with the Bloomsbury group and the Cambridge Apostles; G. E. Moore, Bertrand Russell and John Maynard Keynes were friends. He was an avid cricket fan and befriended the young C. P. Snow who was one also.

Wallace Thurman (August 16, 1902 - December 22, 1934)

Wallace Henry Thurman (1902–1934) was an American novelist during the Harlem Renaissance. He is best known for his novel The Blacker the Berry: A Novel of Negro Life, which explores discrimination among black people based on skin color. In 1925 Thurman moved to Harlem. During this time, Thurman's rooming house apartment at 267 West 136th Street in Harlem became the main place where the African-American literary avant-garde and visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance met and socialized. Thurman and Hurston mockingly called the room "Niggerati Manor", in reference to all of the black literati who showed up there. The walls of Niggerati Manor were painted red and black, colors to be emulated on the cover of Fire!! Nugent painted murals on the walls, some of which contained homoerotic content. Thurman married Louise Thompson Patterson on August 22, 1928. The marriage lasted only six months. Thompson said that Wallace was a homosexual and thus their union was incompatible. Thurman died at the age of 32 from tuberculosis, which many suspect was exacerbated by his long fight with alcoholism.
