Alan Bates (February 17, 1934 - December 27, 2003)

Sir Alan Arthur Bates, CBE was an English actor who came to prominence in the 1960s, a time of high creativity in British cinema, when he appeared in films ranging from the popular children's story Whistle down the Wind to the "kitchen sink" drama A Kind of Loving. John Curry was a British figure skater. He was the 1976 Olympic and World Champion. Prior to the 1976 World Championships, Curry was outed as gay by a German tabloid newspaper, Bild-Zeitung. It caused a brief scandal in Europe at the time, but the press and public generally ignored Curry’s sexual orientation for many years afterwards. In 1987, Curry was diagnosed with HIV, and in 1991 with AIDS. Before his death, he spoke openly to the press about both his disease and his sexual orientation. He died of an AIDS-related heart attack on April 15, 1994 in Binton; he was 44 years old. A 2007 biography of actor Alan Bates claimed that Curry and Bates had a two-year affair, and that Curry died in Bates' arms. Other than Curry, Bates had numerous homosexual relationships throughout his life, including those with actors Nickolas Grace and Peter Wyngarde.

Marlene Dietrich (December 27, 1901 – May 6, 1992)

Mercedes de Acosta was involved in numerous lesbian relationships with Broadway’s and Hollywood's elite and did not attempt to hide her sexuality, which was rare in her generation. In 1916, she began an affair with actress Alla Nazimova and later with dancer Isadora Duncan. After her relationship with actress Eva Le Gallienne ended, she was involved with several famous actresses and dancers including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Ona Munson, and Russian ballerina Tamara Platonovna Karsavina. Additional unsubstantiated rumors include Pola Negri, Eleonora Duse, Katharine Cornell, and Alice B. Toklas. Mercedes threatened to throw Dietrich into a swimming pool if she continued to send flowers (Dietrich had been inundating Acosta with tulips, roses, and orchids). Unlike her professional celebrity, which was carefully crafted and maintained, Marlene Dietrich's personal life was kept out of public view. Dietrich, who was bisexual, enjoyed the thriving gay scene of the time and drag balls of 1920s Berlin. She also defied conventional gender roles through her boxing at Turkish trainer and prizefighter Sabri Mahir’s boxing studio in Berlin, which opened to women in the late 1920s. As Austrian writer Hedwig (Vicki) Baum recalls in her memoir, "I don't know how the feminine element sneaked into those masculine realms [the boxing studio], but in any case, only three or four of us were tough enough to go through with it (Marlene Dietrich was one)."

Michael Callen (April 11, 1955 - December 27, 1993)

Michael Callen was a singer, songwriter, composer, author, and AIDS activist. First diagnosed with "Gay related immune deficiency" (GRID) in 1982, Callen quickly became a leader in the response to the epidemic. He was a founding member of the People with AIDS Self-Empowerment Movement, and he testified before the President's Commission on AIDS and both houses of the United States Congress. His lover was a drummer from Chicago named Richard Dworkin. The two men first met in 1982, when Callen decided to form a gay band. He put an advertisement in a local paper, and Dworkin was one of those who answered. One night, Dworkin stayed late at Callen's apartment. Callen remembered, "He made this pass at me. I was so shocked. I said, 'Wait, stop, you don't know. I have AIDS.'” Dworkin decided that he was willing to take the risk, and the two men grew devoted to each other. After the bowling alleys, the toilet stalls, and the baths, Michael Callen lived whatever days he had left much like a good Methodist from Ohio. "Love's a funny thing," Richard Dworkin said. In partnership with Oscar winner Peter Allen and Marsha Melamet, Callen wrote his most famous song, Love Don't Need a Reason, which he sang frequently at gay pride and AIDS-related events around the country.

Michael McDowell (June 1, 1950 - December 27, 1999)

Michael McDowell was an American novelist and screenwriter. He received a B.A. and an M.A. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in English from Brandeis University in 1978. Stephen King once described him as "the finest writer of paperback originals in America today". McDowell's life partner of 30 years was the theatre historian and director Laurence Senelick. McDowell died in 1999 in Boston from AIDS-related illness. His unfinished novel Candles Burning was "completed" by Tabitha King, and published in 2006.  "I am a commercial writer and I'm proud of that", he said in the book Faces of Fear in 1985. "I am writing things to be put in the bookstore next month. I think it is a mistake to try to write for the ages.” McDowell collaborated with his close friend Dennis Schuetz in writing four mysteries starring Daniel Valentine and Clarisse Lovelace, Vermillion, Cobalt, Slate, and Canary, under the pseudonym Nathan Aldyne. They are light mysteries set in and around Boston and Provincetown. Daniel is a gay social worker turned bartender and Clarisse is a straight real estate agent and later a lawyer. Descriptions of the contemporary gay scene and its problems are lively and colorful.
