The Valet by Mel Gough

I have to admit, I am generally not drawn to period pieces. Having said that, every now and then I come across a tale that is so wonderfully crafted, that you cannot help but be whisked away into another era and live the life that unfolds within the pages of the story. Gough has achieved time travel with this novella. Despite my initial hesitation, I felt as though I was living in the English countryside at the beginning of the century, and it reminded me of the popular TV series, Downtown Abbey. My only wish was that this had been longer. Well done.

The Yakuza Path (Flowers of Flesh and Blood) by Amy Tasukada

This is a wonderfully dark crime story with a lot of twists and turns. Although there is a relationship at the centre of it, it’s not a romance. The characters are complex and flawed, and have to hide any weaknesses, which includes their feelings for each other. I became immersed in the authentic setting and culture as soon as I started reading. The author doesn’t shy away from describing the brutality of this world, the threats feel very real, as do the consequences of crossing their enemies. Nothing comes without cost.

Weekend at Bigfoot’s by Addison Albright

A gentle comedic take on an old story. Lovely.

The First Age (The Secret Histories #1) by Arshad Ahsanuddin

I loved the world building, and how all the character stories fit together, especially the connection between Mikal and Rian. The magic system is interesting and well thought out. This is the first of a series, and doesn’t stand alone or give a feeling of wrapping up this portion of the storyline.
