I think I have to give to Lydia Nyx the chance of a “longer” read, the two short I read seem to be really worth it. Fire in the Desert shares with The Game in Spain (the other short story I read) the same nice “naughty” touch (and indeed these are called Naughty Nibble). And as for the previous, even if the story is short, the plot is not: it really seems that in less than 20 pages, she condensed an entire novel.

Garrett is in Egypt to investigate on the rumours that there is a real life dragon; but more than in the dragon, Garrett seems interested in Keegan, his off/on lover since the time they were in college together. Keegan is an archaeologist but he is not in Egypt for a field job, he has the power to control the fire and he is worshipped by a local tribe like a shaman.

That is basically all the story, but it’s not really the story that is the main point, it’s more the feeling, the development of the characters and yes, also the naughtiness: there was a point when I was really starting to believe the author would dare what I have only once found in a story (sex in shifted form), but she arrived just on the edge, without completely falling on the dark side. That is not a negative point, since I believe in this way she remained on a level that matches a wider target.

and I agree with what you say. It felt like an entire novel was condensed into a short story. Had this been lengthened, fleshed out, I think it would have done the characters and plot a greater service. Still, I greatly enjoyed the read.

it really felt like a chapter of a full novel, and I wouldn't have minded to read it whole
