It’s always with a little worry that I read a book so far into a series when I haven’t read all the previous installments, but North’s Complications is a nice and quick novella with a very good point on its favor.

First of all I enjoyed the strange contrast to have an usually dominant character, a tiger shifter, playing the role of the twink and submissive lover (even if submissive is maybe a strong term, I would use bottom is you are able to attach to this other word the “playful” meaning I want to convey). Dominic is not a weak man, but he is young and he has all the joy of life of a young gay man living fully his youth. On the other hand, North, his mate, is a shapeshifter fox, of Japanese origins, and he is as detached as these two elements let you imagine; but with Dominic he is not able to maintain the aloof attitude, and in the end, he will surrender to Dominic’s playfulness.

The strong point I was saying above is that, at one point, Dominic is in a bad situation, needing someone near him 24/7, but at the same time there is the villain, the one who put Dominic in that bad situation, to hunt down. Sincerely, most of the time, the hero of the day will leave the side of his beloved one, with the justification that he has to do what is right, that he has to avenge his beloved one… here instead North prefers to let others do the hero job and remains near Dominic. I really, really liked this point, there was really no need to prove to the reader he is an hero, for me he has won all the needed points remaining with Dominic and loving him unconditionally.
