On the trend of MIB, Aliens, Smith and Jones is one very nice sci-fi/fantasy story; set in a contemporary setting, like in the MIB movie series, it suggests aliens are living between us, and a special force unit has the task to track them down. Most of the time, aliens are not dangerous creatures, and when Connor and his colleagues hunt them, it’s more to protect than to damage.

Then one day something strange happens to Connor, he “senses” another being literally poking his mind; Noah is an alien who was stranded on earth almost 400 years ago. He is not immortal but he ages very slowly and so now, 4 century after, he is still living among us. Noah’s breed mates for life, but he would have never expected to find his mate among the human race, even less the human is one of the men he is trying to avoid for the last century or so.

I really, really like the almost “familiar” feeling of the story; true, it deals with aliens and co. but it was not really a paranormal story. Noah has a pretty ordinary life, as antique books seller, and when not chasing after aliens, Connor is a 9 to 5 white collar worker. When Connor realizes his bond with Noah is real and strong, despite him having a boyfriend at the time, is also able to admit the bond and to find a way to follow it without being unfaithful to his current partner.

I have already stated in the past, one of my favorite sci-fi movie was Starman, since there was the supernatural element without being too over the top; on a Star Wars or Galactica, I was more a Starman’s fan, and this novel reminded me a lot of that movie. Plus there is a drama element to shake the story up a bit, but it’s not really so big to be the real center of the story; the growing bond between Connor and Noah manages to remain the focus of the story and of the reader’s interest.
