Since I’m used to the Siren Publishing production, I’m not surprised about the tone of this fantasy novel: it’s a little bloody, very much erotic, and not really politically correct. Even if used and abused, Maithe is not a victim: an Halfling demon, his breed is condemned to servitude to the human race, but Maithe is “special”, he has more demon blood in his body than other halflings and as such, he is entitled to be owned only by royalty. Problem is that the king of this realm is already mated to Maithe’s brother and so what will happen to him? While Maithe loves his brother, he doesn’t really care for anyone else if not himself, and so, when the chance comes to be owned by Astle, the son of a neighborhood king, it doesn’t seem to me that Maithe struggles a lot with the idea.

As I said, the story is quite “bloody”, there is a lot of violence, even on innocent people, but not only that type of violence; the coupling between Maithe and Astle is always quite rude, and Maithe, described at time like a lamb (I suppose for his horns) and at time as an angel (probably for his feathery wings), comes out from them bruised and tattered, but also very much satisfied. Maithe has a wicked core, and he is not scared by Astle’s rude attitude. On the other hand, Astle has found a matching soul in Maithe, and he knows he hasn’t to control when he is with the other man.

This is not the story of a rescue of an innocent soul, this is more the story of two partners in crime meeting each other. Maithe is no lamb or angel, and Astle is no Prince Charming. Two really original characters; moreover I have to pay homage to the author for her fantasy world, and for not backing from making it cruel and dangerous: this is no fairy tale, and not even the main characters are safe from possible death.
