I just added a new post to the "Chatting with" series on "Rosa is for Romance". Carol Townend: Love for Ancient and Medieval History
"Thank you for inviting me to Rosa is for Romance. I was very pleased to learn that La Sposa Sassone is going to Italy, not least because of the Norman connection.
The Normans were extremely warlike and acquisitive, and in the eleventh century many of them came to England as well as Italy! In England, the process of settlement was fraught with difficulties. La Sposa Sassone describes the early stages of the settlement, just after the Norman Conquest. The English King has been killed in battle, alongside most of his Saxon warriors, and the Norman Duke William has yet to be crowned.
La Sposa Sassone takes place in an area of southern England known as Wessex, which was where the heart of Saxon power lay. The main city was Winchester and the cathedral which still stands was built by the Normans. While I was doing research for the novel, I went into the museum opposite the cathedral and found some scale models of the city as it was in the eleventh century. My husband took pictures.
