Book four in the Phantom River Series

One man is trapped in a continual existence of hellish nightmares-the other strives to finally see the silver eyes of his mate glow with happiness.

Charlie Chaunterel may have been rescued from Adam Broyles ten year ago, however damage from his experience has festered deep in his mind, slowly eating away at Charlie's will to live. He has alienated himself from nearly all his friends and family, except for the big brother who saved him from the demon's clutches.

Bryan Etchason has been in love with Charlie and known he is his mate since they were teenagers. Charlie's kidnapping and torture by Bryan's creator has left the man constantly hovering between the need to hold Charlie in his arms and the acceptance that Charlie must have time to heal if their mating is to have any chance of survival.

As Charlie and Bryan navigate the pathway to his recovery, Charlie finds himself having to make a choice between the man whose touch keeps him warm and stirs a heat inside his body...or the voice that comes to him frequently in the dark of night, calming the tempest of his mind. If only he could have them both...

OOOOOOOk, now looking at this picture of Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, playing Kirk and Spock in 2009's Star Trek movie, you are telling me there is not an "innuendo" to fanfic? retoric question, of course...

Inside the Vortex by Justin Hernandez
Publisher: CreateSpace (June 15, 2012)
Amazon Kindle: Inside the Vortex

What if the foundation of your life was based on abuse, denial, cover-ups, and secrecy? How would that affect your decision-making process? These are the questions Justin Hernandez asks himself as he reflects upon his existence. From his upbringing in New York to a cross-country move to Los Angeles for a dance career, every tumultuous episode of his life is examined in this confessional memoir. Inside the Vortex is the story of one man's journey that is filled with deception, abuse, addiction, sex, and stripping. At times, all the elements intersect. Other times, they collide.

On the trend of MIB, Aliens, Smith and Jones is one very nice sci-fi/fantasy story; set in a contemporary setting, like in the MIB movie series, it suggests aliens are living between us, and a special force unit has the task to track them down. Most of the time, aliens are not dangerous creatures, and when Connor and his colleagues hunt them, it’s more to protect than to damage.

Then one day something strange happens to Connor, he “senses” another being literally poking his mind; Noah is an alien who was stranded on earth almost 400 years ago. He is not immortal but he ages very slowly and so now, 4 century after, he is still living among us. Noah’s breed mates for life, but he would have never expected to find his mate among the human race, even less the human is one of the men he is trying to avoid for the last century or so.

I really, really like the almost “familiar” feeling of the story; true, it deals with aliens and co. but it was not really a paranormal story. Noah has a pretty ordinary life, as antique books seller, and when not chasing after aliens, Connor is a 9 to 5 white collar worker. When Connor realizes his bond with Noah is real and strong, despite him having a boyfriend at the time, is also able to admit the bond and to find a way to follow it without being unfaithful to his current partner.

I have already stated in the past, one of my favorite sci-fi movie was Starman, since there was the supernatural element without being too over the top; on a Star Wars or Galactica, I was more a Starman’s fan, and this novel reminded me a lot of that movie. Plus there is a drama element to shake the story up a bit, but it’s not really so big to be the real center of the story; the growing bond between Connor and Noah manages to remain the focus of the story and of the reader’s interest.
