Michael Stricker is still reeling from his partner's sudden and untimely death when he meets someone new, someone he could really care about. But first he needs time, time to get his life back in order and time to get over is lost love. But learning to live alone again is nearly impossible with his well-meaning relatives treating him like a poor helpless blind guy. When Alan Stuart befriends Phillip DiMartino's grieving partner, the last thing he expects is to discover hidden lies and infidelity. Guilty over his attraction to the still-grieving man, Alan resolves to stay silent. But the truth has a way of coming out, and soon a dead man's secrets bring about more heartbreak than Alan could have imagined. Although both men vow to keep their distance, staying away is easier said than done, even when it's Too Soon For Love.
While I first knew Marshall Moore for his An Ideal for Living, publisher with an LGBT press, this collection of short stories is not specifically LGBT, even if many of the characters are lesbian, bisexual or gay. The “extraordinariness” of these characters is not given by their sexuality, but lies on how much twisted they are. By the way, reading the blurb, I was expecting for this to be a collection of supernatural stories, but it’s actually a mix, and some of them are about the extraordinaire ordinariness of modern time. It’s difficult to explain, but it’s not something from outside that makes these men and women special, it’s all in them, in their mind, in their attitude: they stand apart, estranged from the contest where they are living.
So, I decided to plan a weekend in New York City before attending the GayRomanceLiterature convention in Albquerque, and look what I have just found out?
Since I’m used to the Siren Publishing production, I’m not surprised about the tone of this fantasy novel: it’s a little bloody, very much erotic, and not really politically correct. Even if used and abused, Maithe is not a victim: an Halfling demon, his breed is condemned to servitude to the human race, but Maithe is “special”, he has more demon blood in his body than other halflings and as such, he is entitled to be owned only by royalty. Problem is that the king of this realm is already mated to Maithe’s brother and so what will happen to him? While Maithe loves his brother, he doesn’t really care for anyone else if not himself, and so, when the chance comes to be owned by Astle, the son of a neighborhood king, it doesn’t seem to me that Maithe struggles a lot with the idea.
