Jonathan Ned Katz (born 1938)

Jonathan Ned Katz (born 1938) is an American historian of human sexuality who has focused on same-sex attraction and changes in the social organization of sexuality over time. His works focus on the idea, rooted in social constructionism, that the categories with which we describe and define human sexuality are historically and culturally specific, along with the social organization of sexual activity, desire, relationships, and sexual identities.

Katz graduated from The High School of Music & Art in New York City with a major in art in 1956. Since 2004, he has begun to emerge publicly as a visual artist. He went on to study at Antioch College, the City College of New York, The New School, and Hunter College. As a teenager, Katz was featured in Life magazine for his efforts to create a film version of Tom Sawyer.

Katz taught as an adjunct at Yale University, Eugene Lang College, and New York University, was the convener of a faculty seminar at Princeton University, and was a keynote speaker at Harvard University. He is a founding member of the Gay Academic Union in 1973 and the National Writers Union in 1980. He was the initiator and is the director of OutHistory.org, a site devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, (LGBTQ) and heterosexual history, that went online in September 2008, and was produced in its first four years by the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies, an institute at the City University of New York Graduate Center, under a grant from the Arcus Foundation. Since 2012, the site has been co-directed by Katz and John D'Emilio.

Katz received the Magnus Hirschfeld Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Sex Research from the German Society for Social-Scientific Sexuality Research in 1997. In 2003, he was given Yale University's Brudner Prize, an annual honor recognizing scholarly contributions in the field of lesbian and gay studies. His papers are collected by the manuscript division of The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library.

He received the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement from Publishing Triangle in 1995.

John Balance founded the experimental music group Coil, in collaboration with his partner Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson. During Coil's 23 years career, they collaborated with a number of peers, including Jim Thirlwell/Clint Ruin (Foetus), Marc Almond, Thighpaulsandra, NON, Current 93, and CoH. Balance died on 13 November 2004, after falling from a two story balcony at their Weston-Super-Mare home. After moving to Bangkok, Christopherson died in his sleep on November 25, 2010.

Alan Bennett gave Schlesinger's own account of his investiture with the CBE. Keith later had male partners, such as Juan Dubose, a deejay who died of AIDS complication before Haring, and Juan Rivera, a carpenter/limo driver.

Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys. In total, the Baron took over 3000 images (and possibly up to 7000), which after his death were left to one of his models, Pancrazio Buciunì, known as Il Moro (or U Moru) for his North African looks. Il Moro had been von Gloeden's lover since the age of fourteen. Most of the pictures are now in the Fratelli Alinari photographic archive in Florence.

Broken Pieces by Riley Hart

I have never liked much ménages a trois, so maybe I had some prejudices starting this novel, but I have to say the author managed to convince me this triangle was not only possible, but even satisfying for all men involved.

Josiah and Mateo, just one year apart from each other, met while in the same foster home: Josiah the good guy, but painfully shy, already aware of being gay, but with absolutely no courage of admitting it; Mateo, the bad boy, from the wrong side of town, waiting to be of age to go back to the gang his father was leading and that he was supposed to replace. Nothing seems to link them if not they are both orphans and gay, and with an emptiness that, to their young age, seems possible to fulfill only being together, their two alone against the world.

But of course it is not so easy to let behind your past, and they need a mainstay, someone like Tristan; even if no one would say Mateo needs protection, I had the feeling Tristan wanted to expiate his supposed past crimes taking care not only of Josiah but also Mateo. Taking care of Josiah is easy, he is like a puppy, someone who looks at you with hope in his eyes, so much that it’s impossible to say no. But Mateo is like a stray dog, someone who doesn’t look you cause he doesn’t want to trust again for the fear of being betrayed again; but like a stray dog, if you manage to convince him you are worthy of his love, he will repay you with ten thousand more love back.

This is an erotic romance, and as such, the sex scenes are a good share, and an important element of the story. Said that, it’s also important to notice that there is a story indeed beyond that, and this is what I appreciate more.

Cooper's Hawk by Victor J. Banis

This was a short story, but very moving. A very much believable story too, about two long-term partners: Adam and Mike are simple men with a very ordinary life; both widower with young sons, 3 boys Adam, 2 girls Mike, they found each other and raised their kids together. Just like that, not fancy ceremonies or legal fight, they were both daddies to their five children and shared a good life together.

But love cannot do anything against old age and death, and Adam preceded Mike; that was just few days ago, and now Mike is simply waiting for the time when he will be able to reach Adam in whatever paradise they are allowed to share. It can be sad to think, especially for your children, but actually Mike is old, and frail, and Adam was his shield against old age; now that Adam is gone, what is the reason for Mike to stay? Sure his children love him, even Adam’s children love him like if they were his own, but in a way, it’s right, and better, for Mike to be forever with Adam again.
